Starting the thread due to discussion beginning from >>/blue/15154.

Do you want an opportunity to write about your favorite Touhous, without having to shoulder the responsibilities of a full CYOA? Have some ideas for shorts rattling around in the back of your head

Well, worry not, this is the event for you!

As is probably apparent from the subject heading, this will be the general thread for a writing contest, the idea of which was shamelessly stolen from Broand's idea two years ago (for those interested, that contest's first thread was here >>3947).

At any point in the next week, anyone interested can submit short pieces of writing, with any tones or characters you wish, for the perusal of the site's anons. I must ask that all entries are submitted anonymously, as everyone tripfagging with their entries would undoubtedly lead to popularity (or lack thereof) biasing votes. Any entries posted with identifying information (names, trips, footnotes about how "we might know you from" such-and-such) will be disqualified from the voting process.

If you wish to come forth and identify yourselves after voting is complete, however, by all means do so. I won't be requiring this, obviously (how could I?) so if you really wish your entry to remain anonymous, for any reason, this is fine as well.

Entry is possible in the following categories:
Normal/Veterans: >>/th/161977 For those of you who have prior experience writing on THP. If you've only started in the last month or so and would wish to enter in the rookie contest that's allowed, but anyone more experienced should refrain from doing so.
Normal/Rookies: >>/th/161976 For those of you who have not written any stories on the site as yet, but would be interested in giving it a try. Separate category for those of you who don't want to deal with competing with the big-name writefags.
Erotica: >>/at/26936 Self-explanatory, I should hope. If it's smut, keep it in this thread.

Keep it to one entry per category, obviously, but if anyone thinks they can handle producing both a normal and /at/ short in the next week, go ahead and challenge yourself.

All entries can be a maximum of one post in length: 30000 characters, or roughly 5000 words in my experience.

Entries can be submitted for up to the next week (ending at 12/10/11(Thu)00:00), and the voting will be open for 2 or more days afterward. Everyone is welcome to write, read, and vote.

No particular reason, except that extending it over too long a time would seem likely to make people procrastinate and put things off. And the longer they'd be able to do that for, the less motivated they'd be to actually write.

Plus, a week is nearly twice as long as last time, and that turned out some pretty good entries. I think it should be enough for most people, though I'm sorry if you don't personally feel the same.

I guess it depends on the category. For the Veteren's at least, I guess it might be okay since they have a higher level of quality to uphold and the proof reading process is part of it. For the new guys, I'm holding it should be no one but them selves. I want to see their raw writing, before it's been looked over and cleaned. It's easier to understand their writing ability when it's only them.

Am I making any sense or am I sounding silly and incomprehensible?

As someone in the veteran category, frankly I'd suggest everyone take proofing where they can get it. Peer review is crucial for the writing process, and learning to take criticism is probably the most important piece of being a good writer. Really, the question for the new writers is proof now versus proof later. Proof now will help them set good habits that much sooner, and become used to going back and revising work before it's considered done.

Sure, I guess, but it also spoils the submissions for the veterans who proof read. I mean, there's only around ten or fifteen active writefags who'd proof read. Maybe if they want proof reading, they should ask others off site, or at least, not the veterans?

We can encourage them to look over their work and edit and revise repeatedly before submitting.

I'm really keen on seeing their raw work, without outside influences changing their writing. Just a writefag and his words. It's bad to get them into a bad habit, I understand, but it's harder to gauge how good they really are if someone with experience has gone over their work and cut out or revised parts.

Ancientfag here. This is sensible, yet I think it defeats the purpose of the competitive spirit. Veterans should be held to a much higher standard sure, but I don't think they should be allowed the privilege of an editor because they've been around for a while. All or none, says I. And my bias is towards no outside means of support. I've done it that way for years. One man (or woman), one submission, no proofreading, final destination.

So basically, I just want to see what our vets are capable of on their own terms without any assistance.

In any case, one way or the other I'll be submitting for the veteran category a free-write of sorts in my usual fashion (late, somewhat short, and maybe a bit too off-kilter for its own good). I'll be doing my own editing and grammar-checking over the course of the week and making tweaks, but I won't have a second set of eyes on it until after I post my submission.

I think a large part of the point of this contest is seeing what the site's writers are capable of on our own, without using editors or proofreading. Yes, those are valuable resources, and it's often good practice for writers to make use of them. But, it does seem to me like we could easily end up using these as crutches for our own skills, and it's a good idea to at least occasionally get an unfiltered look at our work. As such, I'll be someone else advocating for a lack of external proofreaders, regardless of level of experience.

I like how everyone in the thread is assuming that writers don't have non-THP proofreaders and friends. "No proofreading" is completely unenforceable anyway, so there's no real point worrying about it. Just let people do what they're comfortable doing.

Having it end on a weekday was not really an ideal choice for people with jobs.

Also, I don't really see the point of setting a limit on the length of submissions. I guess it's unlikely that it's going to affect anyone, realistically, but it seems like an arbitrary restriction for restriction's sake to me.

However -it might be too soon yet to claim this, though-, seeing as how empty the Rookie section is at the moment, what would happen if nobody else sends an entry for the contest in the Rookie category? Would I be declared winner automatically, or will I get paired with the Veterans?

Okay, I'll admit that the amount of notice and time in general allotted for this might have been too short. As such, the new deadline for entries will be 12/10/15(Mon)00:00. Hopefully we can get some more entries in all the categories, but thanks to those who have already submitted.

I don't think it's unreasonable to set a limit on story lengths when the competition is meant to be for short stories. It's important to establish some sort of baseline for comparison; it's a good rule.
