Suika, despite the way she behaved a lot of the time, could be downright frightfully efficient. That I learned from that little adventure. It might have just been that it was just a game of sorts for her. She always took those seriously. Well, whatever the truth might have been, I had to admit that I was really impressed by her actions.
Still keeping with that strange act of hers, she led the way into the woods and into the hills. There was a brisk determination to her steps. She didn't really speak to me, instead stooping over slightly while walking, observing the world through a circular magnifying glass. I didn't really want to ask how long it would take us to get to the other shrine, but we had been walking for quite some time by now and I was feeling a bit anxious. The path we were on was little more than an animal trail.
"Sui-" I quickly corrected myself, "err, Detective, how long until we reach the shrine?" We'd been going uphill for the better half of an hour now, and when I looked back I could see the lake's blue glimmer quite some distance away.
"My dear assistant." She didn't break 'character' (at least I hoped she was acting), ?I find your lack of patience disturbing. You'll never be a proper detective at this rate." She stopped, lowered her magnifying glass and took a puff from her unlit kiseru. "But I sympathize. I too was once as anxious as you."
I really didn't know what she was going on about. This whole experience was almost dream-like. Suika hadn't even had anything to drink since we left the shrine.
"But, you'll be glad to know." Suika adjusted her cap, fitting it snugly between her horns, "that we're there already." She pointed to the right.
Just beyond a couple of trees the distinctive shape of a torii could be seen. And cobbled stone steps leading up to a building hidden, at this angle, by the foliage.
"Let's press on." Suika suggested. I wasn't sure how I felt about this relatively humorless oni. But I wasn't about to confront her about it. It seemed she was helping me, and if that was the case it would be more reason to be thankful for her act.
This shrine was overlooking a vast stretch of woods. It was similar enough, at first glance, to Reimu's shrine but I kept noting the small differences nonetheless. The position of the buildings, the color of the walls were slightly lighter, and in general there seemed to be more light here.
I'd never ever heard of this shrine before. And it looked like the world hadn't either. There wasn't a soul to be seen around. No donations, offerings or anything of the sort at front. In that way it was like the Hakurei shrine. Still, I felt a certain warmth present, something which set it apart.
Suika and I walked inside, looking for someone. We stopped in front of a simple sliding door in what must have been the inner sanctum. The door was slightly ajar, with an empty sake bottle filling the gap.
"Wait. I'll be back." Suika told me, sounding as serious as she had been since the start. I nodded and let the oni creep into the room while I stood back.
I had expected something to happen, but nothing did. Time seamed to pass slowly, and I anxiously awaited any signs of life from within. I had to walk back outside and look at the natural scenery in order to get my mind off of things. This place had a nice view, if I tried really hard I could make out the village in the distance, surrounded by large plots of farmland. Farmland that was surely being worked in anticipation of the upcoming harvest festival.
"Well, I think I learned all that we were going to learn here." Suika comes up to you, stroking her chin pensively.
"What did you find?"
"The aftermath of a night of binge drinking. Not pretty."
"So there was someone there?"
"Yes, but she didn't know much. Or couldn't say much because of her massive hangover. Doesn't really matter - The end result is the same. I was only able to get a bit of information. It seems the bubbly shrine maiden that lives here is also gone. Got only that much."
"That's not very helpful."
"Tut tut." Suika took another puff from her unlit kiseru. "It helps us a lot."
"How?"
"Dear assistant, don't you see what this means? The two shrine maidens of Gensokyo are currently missing from their shrines, on some mysterious business. This is more than just a coincidence," She straightened her posture, "it's definitely something."
I pressed her on what she meant by 'something'.
"It would be reckless of me to make a brilliant deduction right now and leave it at that." I frowned. "Hey, don't look so sad. I'm just saying that I that it's not 100% that's all. If I had to guess I'd say that there's very obviously something that's keeping them both occupied."
"Well, how can we find out what it is?"
"Ah." She smiled, "Eager as always my dear assistant I'm glad. A first-class detective always interviews those who are nearest to the subjects in question."
"Wouldn't that be you?"
"Good heavens, no. I've only known Reimu for a little while comparatively. There are others. But..."She stretches the sentence for dramatic effect, "We have another advantage."
"What's that?"
"We now know that this other shrine maiden is gone, and we'll assume to the same place. It's safe to safe that we have an equal chance of finding them both if we ask her acquaintances. Her known associates hang out someplace near here, so it should be easy to track them that. And not only that-" There's a glint in her eyes. A glint I recognized from the times she planned something at my store.
"...and not only what?"
"We've still got my trump card. My super cool informant that knows all. It's your case, assistant, so it's your call. Hope you make the right call. Show that you're my apprentice."
