All of the boards have had their highs and lows (and probably more of the latter), but /eientei/ dead for years barring the rare new story that often dies quickly. It's really not hard to see why.
The only guy who liked the Watatsukis got banned for voting in his own stories because nobody else cared. That leaves you with what? Four characters, five if you count Mokou, who probably fits just as well with the village in /shrine/. Only Reisen seems to have more than minimal contact with any other characters.
It's not that the characters and their home of the Bamboo Forest can't be made interesting, but they're a pain in the ass to write. Writing the otherworldly super-genius Eirin is frustrating if you want to get it right, even before factoring in whether or not you actually like her. As far as I know, Reisen is all over the place in characterization, but at least has popularity and a few fairly workable traits. Kaguya, even on the occasions she isn't stuck as the butt of a bad joke, doesn't seem to actually
do much in comparison to the other characters both within her home and especially outside of it. And then Tewi, the playful trickster with barely anything in common with the others, save for place of residence. There isn't even a common theme to tie their cast herd together like the others tend to have.

So I just saw Aya's new outfit in Forbidden Scrollery, and whether it's the artist's ability to make every single 2hu in the book absurdly hot and/or pretty or not, I find her wearing shorts to be somehow hotter than her wearing a skirt, and that angers me for reasons I do not understand.

Who are the characters, how would they interact, and what kind of story might be suitable for them? Try going from there.
Or you could just write "You meet X, wat do" and wing it from there, maybe ideas will flow afterwards.
Also look through the writing advice threads, they might have some more helpful tips about making a story.
I want to make one too, but I feel like it'd be utter trite and drop it early if I did.

If it's your first story, you're better off just going ahead and eating the frog; sort out a starting point, get
some goal in mind to head towards from there, and jump right into it. Planning is all fine and well, but it means nothing without action. Besides that, more often than not, you come up with stuff as you go along that may or may not displace your plans anyway.
And I need to take my own advice and get back to both of my stories -- as soon as I'm done with this goddamn move, ugh.

Of course, you could always do what I do, and get a basic idea for a story, then literally make up everything as you go based on which choices are made.

You know what you can do to just test the waters? Place scenario. Find character. Place goal. Write down before you can say no.
Provide some options, make sure Write-in is up there and wait. If you make it super (and I mean SUPER) simple, it doesn't have to be good to start with. Heck, simple can literally be something like this:
"Suwako and Koakuma are together for some reason. Koakuma looks nervous. They are both standing on the roof of Eintei.
"[]Kiss the devil
[]Kick the devil
[]Take the shot, now!
[]Write-in."
Heck, it can even be simpler than that, if you want. You can make better updates as each set of votes rolls in. If you let Anon have a hand on the wheel and leave your free hand writing notes as you think of them, you'll find yourself writing something better than you ever thought.

TF2 is an imbalanced shitfest. Heroes of the storm (literally who?) is my favorite MOBA yet it is still casual as fuck. And let's not even talk about the thousands of pay to win bullcrap that is infesting the multi-player genre.
A price tag, or lack thereof, will not stop me from calling a spade a spade.
Nice going with the 'You don't HAVE to play the game' thing though. It actually is a good point when you compare those to all the other games that do force you to play them. The bastards!

The people who make fan scans/translations get shit on all day at work, and then come home to scans/translate for the sole benefit of you and others who will no doubt never send them a word of thanks.

When your taking issue with it takes the form of something that sounds more like a child complaining about what's on his plate because "it smells bad" rather than any form of criticism that would be worth taking seriously? Yes, I would say that is wrong of you.
Believe it or not, but in the vast majority of cases of people making something, the something they made isn't
really shit, and the people who made it typically put in quite a bit more effort than simply squatting over a plate and squeezing one out. What they made might not be very good, and you certainly aren't obligated to like it no matter how much work may have been put into it, but to completely dismiss that work is still a rather dick thing to do.
I realize that it's usually faster, easier, and often more fun to go all hyperbolic on somebody's ass rather than make any attempt to give any sort of genuine, honest critique, but it also doesn't really do anything to help fix whatever problems you have with the thing you're verbally eviscerating.

It also depends on the person who would buy it and share it with everyone not being a fucking idiot and assuming it's going to stay in stock long enough to wait a bit, and/or assuming that if the first two were bought, scanned, and translated, the third book would receive the same treatment.

Once you're done filling space, then you let it sit. Yeah, you heard me. Don't fucking touch it right away. Walk away and work on something else; don't use this as an excuse to bury yourself in vidya instead of writing, of course. After a day or two
at most, come back to your wordpile and let your inner critic out of its crate like the gimp it is. Then, disregard any urge to restart and just find a goddamn way to polish it. Remember: Perfect is a motherfucker who likes to curbstomp Good at every turn. Don't aim for perfect. Don't even aim for "holy shit this is fantastic". Just go for what makes sense.
And one last thing: Inspiration doesn't exist beyond that fickle little mood you might find yourself in once in a while. Waiting for it to strike you is a recipe for never fucking writing again. So, don't wait for it. Write all the fucking time. An hour, thirty minutes, what the fuck ever as long as it's regular, consistent, and makes words happen. Is it going to magically make you update faster? No. Is it going to make it to where you can
get to updating faster? Yes. It's all down to dedicating yourself to the
craft and not relying on some ~spark~ to carry you forward.
So, yeah, go fucking write.
Forgive me for the tryhard post.

Look, people, failure isn't a sin. You make a mistake or otherwise cock-up something, and it goes sideways, the wheels fall off, and everything catches fire. Did anyone die? No? Then there's no problem.
And I know the big thing that everybody's afraid of is having others throw their past mistakes in their face at every opportunity. There are people like that. They're also inconsequential in the big picture. People who make mistakes are people who do things; conversely, anybody who never does anything for themselves never makes a mistake. Anybody who wants to blame you for making an attempt is someone who should be ignored with prejudice.
Stop being afraid to fail. Your ego will hurt, sure. It's a simpering dummy that needs a good beating anyway. Just make your damn mistakes, learn from them, and move on.

There will be a new one each month for three months at this point. The entire reason it's boring is because it's simple so as to not strangle one.
If all goes well, it will keep going after the third month. If all goes poorly, I will be progressing to stage two of my plans.
Plus, winter has a lot that you can do. Letty vs x seasonal character, x character celebrating y oddball holiday for that character to be celebrating, and those two alone are rather broad in potential. Plus, people are having trouble coming up with a story with a broad theme. Imagine a very focused one. It would limit them in an entirely different way.
Focused will be the third month. For now, I'm probing for where the interest is without having to actually attempt to try and get some form of concrete answer. In the end, I'm not the type to have extremely intricate plans, story or otherwise.

That depends on many factors. It's nothing to do with who one pairs Cirno or Letty with, but how. You can play Letty as a proper yukionna, you can have alternate interpretations, subversion, rape, OCs, crossovers, and the list goes on for quite a while.
Heck, that gives me an idea for one, on that note. You underestimate creativity of a writer. Those were ideas off the top of my head. If I actually put a few minutes of thought into it, I could come up with even more varied things.
Plus, seeing as I plan to throw a seasonal contest every season, every year, it being done already is a bit of a moot point. Assuming one of my seasonal plans goes wellish, mind you.

Because people who have already written things in part would then be angrier than the minorly peeved over this issue. The fact of the matter is, it's a seasonal contest simply because Christmas is too selective for those that don't celebrate it, and strangles creativity. It's also too late in the month to do such a contest, as then it would end on the 25th. This is meant to be a baseline, where as future years are meant to be alterations to the formula.
If I changed it, it would also defeat the purpose of the contest to begin with, and that is to test the waters. One cannot learn without trial and error, and if this is in error I need to first confirm that it is as such. Others have voiced an interest in the contest. That's plenty enough reason to keep it the way it is, as spitting on their hard work will hardly be according to plan.
Furthermore, the fact that a winter contest was held some time in the past doesn't simply invalidate the idea. At the least, it happened a year ago. There are new touhous, new canon, new possibilities. Touhou isn't a static series of just one game. There was a new game announced recently, even.
Plus, if one thinks that all there is to winter is Letty pairings, they need to be more creative. I've already listed some of those possibilities. There is more to a story than waifus, after all. Hibernation for insects and a certain eyeball thing is a topic that can be broached. The harsh Winter months can be trying on one's coffers, and threadbare linens are far from suitable to keep out the cold. Winter is a thing of death, where as Autumn is dying, Summer is life and Spring is birth. If all goes well, I'll take your words into consideration in Spring, but as of right now they will simply muddle my intentions of establishing something to judge the state and opinions of the site by.

It might be a good idea to start up a contest intrest thread or survey before making a multi-part contest plan. Involving the community in the decision making stage would help to solidify both writer and reader turnout.

I participated in the contest poll after the most recent. There was an interest, which is why I'm doing it to begin with.
