THE STORY SO FAR:
The world has ended, but five (well, it’s complicated) humans get a chance to do it over, and make things right. Only problem is, for their second go around, they're not going to be 'human'...
Kosuzu has only spent a day in the Animal Realm since awakening to her past self’s memories. In that time, her world has been turned upside-down in more ways than one - most notably, when she learned her mother was not Kudamaki Tsukasa, but Yakumo Ran.
During this time she bonded closely with a young Okazaki Yumemi. Like the Immaterial Children, she has traveled through time - though unlike them, she travels using scientific means as part of a stable time loop. A future version of Yumemi has been subtly intervening in the fates of all the Immaterial Children, for reasons yet unknown. But for Kosuzu - perhaps out of gratitude for the fox saving her life - she has been directly acting to help her grow in power and confidence. Her most recent, reckless, and costly attempt to do so was to rescue the grimoire Kosuzu had been using - a tome penned by Ran, delivered to her wayward daughter by Yukari herself.
But the woman who kidnapped Kosuzu all those years ago will not go quietly into that good night. She seized the young Yumemi as part of a vicious Keiga onslaught, and fled to a haniwa factory overtaken by the wolves. Chen and Kosuzu have begun a daring plan, seeking to delay and distract the Keiga matriarch Kurokoma Saki long enough for Ran to finally arrive and rescue them all.
Key to this stalling is a duel between Chen and Saki. But Tsukasa seeks to cut the fight short by collapsing the water tower above, weakening Chen and giving Saki a quick victory. The only one who can stop her now is Kosuzu herself, and the power sleeping within…

The room they were passing through seemed to be a firing room, consisting of dozens of large kilns aligned in rows. Even though the facility had been defunct for hours, the room was still swelteringly hot, with some kilns broken open and spitting flame.
The kitsune sent waves of danmaku after Tsukasa, who fired back in turn. The latter was undoubtedly the better fighter in an even situation, but being the pursuer was playing at least partially to Kosuzu’s favor. She could see where they were going and what her opponent was doing at the same time; she could see when it was worth it to try and weave through the bullets, and when it worth just diving through and taking a few cuts. Tsukasa was forced to divide her focus to keep pace, always paying mind to her surroundings.
Kosuzu shot aggressively, off center from her target. Tsukasa smirked as she swung to the side, only to be struck in the back by the spray of ricocheting bullets. The tube fox responded by charging a large orb of light, and throwing it into one of the kilns she was passing. Kosuzu had to dive away, ducking behind another kiln to avoid the worst as it exploded into shrapnel.
The kitsune saw Tsukasa dash off around a corner of the room, likely for some door she couldn’t see from her angle. Kosuzu rushed to pursue, grabbing onto a conduit built into a corner of the room to try and swing her momentum around. The piping instead broke from its supports with a gaseous hiss, sending the girl tumbling to the ground and struggling to right herself.
By the time she had, Tsukasa had run to the next room, its doorway long torn-off already. Kosuzu scrambled to pursue. The room she saw appeared to be a maintenance hallway, designed to manage the heat and fuel of the firing room with a network of now-damaged tubings.
Tsukasa had stopped firing any more danmaku, leaving Kosuzu worried she was charging a more serious spell. The slightest gleam in the darkness caught Kosuzu’s attention, and her instincts screamed. She braked as hard as she could, even grabbing on to the doorframe to bring herself to a complete stop before she passed through it. A metal pipe swung down just inches in front of her head, cracking the floor below.
Kosuzu whirled around the door, kicking at the Kuda-gitsune as the latter backed up. Tsukasa threw the makeshift weapon at the younger fox, forcing her to block it with her arms and drawing out a yelp. “Now this is my kind of room!” The pipe-fox was beaming. “I think I could get just about anywhere from here!”
“Oh no you don’t!” Kosuzu sent off a volley of shots directly at the kidnapper. Tsukasa responded by summoning two yellow orbs, which fired lines of yellow dagger danmaku. The daggers rattled into the loosened tubing, causing the whole room to convulse like a living beast in pain. Kosuzu heard sections clattering down behind her, water gushing from them.
The criss-crossing lines of daggers forced Kosuzu back, while Tsukasa took the moment to progress forwards. It wasn’t long before she was back by the door they’d entered from, and the pipe she’d clearly taken to strike the kitsune with.
Kosuzu realised her mistake as she saw her opponent smirk, waving goodbye. She tried to rush through the daggers, wincing in pain as they cut her, but Tsukasa had already dived into the broken pipe, her slender form snaking into the network.
[ ] Follow her into the pipe network!

Entering those pipes is a kuda-gitsune tactic, which we decidedly are not. She'll have the upper hand if we even think to try. Smash the shit out of them, drop her on her ass!

[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
why follow someone in a maze when you can just get rid of the maze entirely? cut her off, push her out of her element.
gotta admit i'm confused on the way kosuzu's strikes are counted here. could we get some clarification on what "1/2 grip rounded up" means?
[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
Follow the pipe fox into her element? Hahaha no. Let's not.
>>212146
The number of strikes you were gonna start at for this battle was based on half your grip points, rounded up.
So:
1-2 Grip /2 = 0.5 or 1 strike = 1 strike.
3-4 Grip /2 = 1.5 or 2 strikes = 2 strikes
5 Grip /2 = 2.5 strikes = 3 strikes.
And of course 0/2 is still 0, so zero strikes.

[X] Follow her into the pipe network!
>The daggers rattled into the loosened tubing, causing the whole room to convulse like a living beast in pain. Kosuzu heard sections clattering down behind her, water gushing from them
I think that Tsukasa is trying to goad Kosuzu into accomplishing her plan to drop water (even if at this point a smaller amount than the whole water tower.) Onto the duel by bursting open a bunch of those pipes with danmaku
>>212150
Better here, away from where Chen and Saki are fighting, than where they are fighting. Remember, Kosuzu is not an actual Tube Fox, and Tsukasa’s been going in pipes for far longer. Entering the pipe network is just ceding the advantage to Tsukasa, while blowing up the pipes is hampering her journey and decreasing the water in the big reservoir Tsukasa plans to swamp the battlefield outside with.

Unless we've been rused hard and this maintenance room attached to the firing room is also super close to the station (I dont know much about haniwa production factories but id imagine youd want the two to be seperated bcuz of heat management and the station getting in the way of production lines, the fired clay vessel isnt the finished product to be shipped off... I think?)
I've been waiting for this fight for so long
[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
There's potentially another problem too iirc. The Kilns are not far from this room, and some of them are still active. Thanks to discworld i know that Cold water + red-hot clay = explosion.
[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
Fighting Tsukasa in her own environment (tubes) sounds like a bad idea let's try to force her out and hope we can slow her down.

Thank for the comments! I was not thinking in universe for the costumes so Okuu's was a slip on my part, don't read too much on that detail ^_^U
I might update this drawing when Marisa is eventually chosen/revealed. ("might" being the keyword here).
As Gooboi said, the idea of Marisa being dressed as Mima was his and there are some designs around for her, ready to be chosen. I hope you like whichever origin she ends up with, it's been fun to help design stuff in the "backstage". That's one of the reasons I'd not been posting more drawings recently. I have one or two drawings in the backburner so maybe I'll finish them in the next days. Right now I'm going to take a day or two to relax, that last drawing took like 20-ish hours over the course of the week. Note to self: draw less characters lol
Anyways, the voting:
[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
I feel that using the pipes is a trap, and I'm guessing grip is still not out of the question. Maybe we use the pipes and we get 1-2 grip instead of 1 strike, which would be more or less the same?
Still, the pipes are Tsukasa's home turf and it would be easy to wait with an ambush on the other side of the pipe, or sealing the pipe itself behind her, it's safer to fire at the pipes (even if not a good option, it's the better of the two, imo)
[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
I do agree with the potential comment that Tsukasa might be trying to goad Kosuzu into doing her job for her, but following her in would be diving into a viper's nest. It's probably best to try and cut her off. Also, don't we still have the hairpin?
Escape is victory...
Bye bye escape! I even have a little write-in as an extra fuck you. Not sure if it's any good, but...
[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
- [X] Focus some of your fire on the couplings connecting the pipes.
Just to minimize her options. Especially if there are any three or four way pipe couplings in here.
By the way, this is absolutely a reckless decision since we have no clue if there is anything else flowing in the pipes. I find that I don't care.

We might be helping Tsukasa, but following her just feels like a bad move.

To expand my thought on the Kilns, here’s the notable info of the update
>The room they were passing through seemed to be a firing room, consisting of dozens of large kilns aligned in rows. Even though the facility had been defunct for hours, the room was still swelteringly hot, with some kilns broken open and spitting flame.
>but being the pursuer was playing at least partially to Kosuzu’s favor. She could see where they were going and what her opponent was doing at the same time; she could see when it was worth it to try and weave through the bullets, and when it worth just diving through and taking a few cuts. Tsukasa was forced to divide her focus to keep pace, always paying mind to her surroundings.
Being behind is to our advantage
>Kosuzu shot aggressively, off center from her target. Tsukasa smirked as she swung to the side, only to be struck in the back by the spray of ricocheting bullets. The tube fox responded by charging a large orb of light, and throwing it into one of the kilns she was passing. Kosuzu had to dive away, ducking behind another kiln to avoid the worst as it exploded into shrapnel.
The kilns are explosive. Kosuzu also loses sight of Tsukasa trying to avoid getting hurt from the explosion.
The pipes are loose from the damage.
Firing off danmaku is going to cause piping to be dislodged… and there’s no guarantee that Kosuzu is going to be able to keep track in the network of which pipe Tsukasa is in, at which point she’s going to have to break random ones to try to hit which means more water heading either to the very hot Kilns, or towards the main floor that Chen is fighting in
And on the note of hitting Tsukasa, remember everyone Tsukasa already can't escape, her collar is still on. Her only option for escape is for Saki to win.
We have to remember that the fight between Tsukasa and Kosuzu isn't focussed on each other. But on the fight between Saki and Chen. In fact the only combatant whose goal is to beat the other is Saki
-Tsukasa is to disrupt Chen so that Saki wins faster
-Kosuzu is to stall out Tsukasa's attempt so that she can't alter the fight before its end.
-Chen is to keep Saki engaged until Ran arrives. and if she can beat Saki.
Especially right at the beginning we don’t want to compromise Chen’s chances just to get a hit in.
Btw the pipe is comparatively quite a bit larger than that keyhole that Kosuzu got through at the start of this Arc so it's not like it's going to be a difficult squeeze for Kosuzu.
And Tsukasa isn't any more familiar with the factory than we are. If she spends too much time trying to set up an Viper's den that is to Kosuzu's advantage in fact speaking of which:
Actually since we don't usually see 2 point gain in a boss fight a grip point over a strike is actually to Kosuzu's advantage. Because it's half a strike per grip point (rounded up that means that it takes 3 GP to make 2 strikes. If we are trading a strike on Tsukasa for a grip point on Kosuzu Kosuzu is going to win. (even if grip 5 is an alternate lose condition, that is still 5 strikes needed to 4, and if it isn’t a auto-fail then that means that at 5 grip there would still need to be a strike on top of that for Tsukasa to win.) Which makes sense because if Tsukasa gets caught up trying to break Kosuzu over her object to disrupt Chen's fight She's going to run out of time.
Even putting aside my bit about the Kilns, if that water makes it out to where Chen and Saki are fighting it won't matter that it didn't come from the water tower directly it will still hinder Chen thus accomplishing what Tsukasa is looking to do.
And again that's if the Kilns that Tsukasa and Kosuzu has come across won't do a better job if the water hits them and explodes, likely rocking the already unstable building and compromising Chen's footing at a bad time. (also, the water could be coming from the plumbing rather than from the emergency water tower in the roof, meaning that the water leaking here is in fact not lowering the level above.
The hairpin is all the more reason why we should be following her rather than risking Chen. Anything that Tsukasa would be able to come up with to trap Kosuzu will be ineffective thanks to the hairpin
>>212160
And Chen won't care when it cuts off her options in her already precarious fight? (also it was stated in the update, fuel, water and heat.)
Quite the opposite, the best move right now is to dog her heels so that she doesn't have time to set anything up. Tsukasa doesn't know the factory at all and has limited time. Being right on her heels takes away any opportunity for her to set anything up. For Kosuzu OR for Chen.
Your grip only determined your strikes at the start of the fight. You'll gain strikes the normal way in this fight.
So, yes, you could have started the fight with 3/4 strikes. It would have taken monumental mismanagement, but it was possible.
Btw, have a theme for the battle:

[X] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
If we fire at the pipes, we might just hit Tsukasa if we’re lucky. Pipes can be also quite complicated, we don’t want to go in just for Tsukasa to outmanoeuvre and then flank us. If they’re complex enough, Kosuzu might even be able to keep up with Tsukasa due to her having a higher degree of freedom with her movement.
Most other points have been covered, one thing though. I’m not 100% certain, but >>212167, I’m pretty sure Kosuzu can’t use the hairpin in fox form, it is after all, quite a small and thin for her paws.
>>212169
the pipes go out of the room, so in the likely event that Kosuzu can't stop Tsukasa (unless eveyone thinks that narratively the fight is going to stay entirely in this room if we are successful, its either out back through the Kilns, or into the pipes, and once that water starts flowing the Kilns are not going to be a place we want to be!) which means that we're probably going to be going into those pipes sooner or later, and is it going to be before or after Tsukasa has something that she can make Kosuzu blame herself for by causing issues for Chen's fight ?
>I’m pretty sure Kosuzu can’t use the hairpin in fox form, it is after all, quite a small and thin for her paws.
Kosuzu seemed to believe that she could use the hairpin during the last confrontation she had with Tsukasa? when she was threatening to put Kosuzu into the tube, which either would trap Kosuzu in there as is but magically small? or she thought that the hairpin was usable at least in some manner in fox form.

Anyways... :3
>>212172
oh yeah with the Van.
I don't suppose that this info can convince anyone that we can follow Tsukasa and handle whatever she might have on hand (since staying right behind her in a place that she doesn't know and thus is only going to be able to use things that she just came across as long as we stay on her tail. rather than indiscriminately firing at pipes with heat, water and [/i]fuel[/i] that will flow towards red hot and also in some cases broken with open flames? especially since both the water (with red hot Clay) and the fuel interacting with the flames in general will cause an explosion that will rock the building at least and harm Chen's chances at staying in the fight...
which is our actual objective here to prevent?
also if anyone is worried about being able to track which pipe Tsukasa went down if we go after her... just follow the most recently "cleaned" pipe
[X] Follow her into the pipe network!
This is probably a super bad idea but we need Tsukasa focused on Kosuzu instead of Chen
>>212174
a super bad idea at least sounds better than decideding to prefer to helping Tsukasa [hurt Chen] then going into the pipes after her... which we will be likely doing anyways because after rereading that "water" that Kosuzu heard pouring was behind her and she hasn't actually looked to see, and what she noted before was that the pipes were managing the heat an "fuel" so its likely primarily fuel. which the more we knock down by shooting the pipes and connectors, the more is flowing towards the open flames billowing the the Kiln room, which is the only way other than the pipes out of the room Kosuzu is in... so the two options the update gives us whittle down to whether we are going to go into "viper's nest" that Tsukasa has gone in with or without adding fuel to the fire (and thus adding more problems if not resulting in a straight up injury, for Chen), and with or without subsequently giving Tsukasa more time to set up a trap for us.
its by not being gripped by fear of facing Tsukasa in the pipes that we'll avoid getting into a viper's nest, not by giving into to it.
The firing room is where the clay is heated to transform into ceramic.
These are kilns, so they are a kind of furnace for ceramics. Traditional kilns use wood or coal as a fuel source, while modern kilns can use gas or electricity to heat up. The factory was closed for a while now but it's still hot, so that mean it's most likely coal (since it takes a loooong while for it to cool off) and not gas or electricity (when turned off these will cool down quicker) and definitely not liquid fuel.
In short, none of the pipes contain liquid fuel, only water in some cases (water is not used in the firing process because you want the less moisture on the clay as possible). Most of the piping could be for chimneys or air intakes, but no water pipes in the firing room itself (maybe emergency fire systems? yes, but nothing used in the process itself).
The most dangerous stuff that can happen about water entering the still-hot firing room is steam (which is REALLY dangerous). No explosion though (yes, ceramic can "explode" as in "it destroys itself violently" but that's due to a sudden buildup of steam inside itself, no actual explosion happens, it's more like a frag grenade than an explosive).
>The room she saw appeared to be a maintenance hallway, designed to manage the heat and fuel of the firing room with a network of now-damaged tubings.
I don't know how you'd transport coal or wood in a network of tubes (Kosuzu didn't mention coal or wood in the room either sooo.), especially considering:
>The daggers rattled into the loosened tubing, causing the whole room to convulse like a living beast in pain. Kosuzu heard sections clattering down behind her, water gushing from them.
there is some sort of liquid flowing through them... that Kosuzu hasn't actually looked at to identify what it was. And on that note, Tsukasa isn't worried too much about dislodging pipes herself since she just did some herself.
also I'm not sure "Awhile" would be accurate here. at most its a couple of hours maybe- actually we do have an estimate about how long the countdown for Ran to arrive! its been less than 57 minutes since the Sargent's last stand., and the focus was on transporting what could be move from the factory. so there is *some* amounts of odds they might not have been shut off properly at all.
How would you transport coal or wood in a network of tubes? You don't.
I interpreted the maintenance room having gauges showing the temperature readings of the kilns, and maybe managing the air flow. Workers fill the kilns with coal as needed.
As I said, water tubes are possible! Water is not used in the room itself but piping does have to run somewhere because it's important to other steps in the process.
You do make a good point that it's not been too long since the factory possibly got abandoned, though.
Also yeah, no mention of coal might mean it could be gas powered after all. Still, there's no chance of it being liquid fuel.
With gas power an explosion could happen depending on how concentrated the gas can be. Else, it will be a big fire on a gas tube or worse, a gas main. Still very dangerous but I don't know for sure if it could explode (see gas flares on oil rigs, for example).
ehh but its says its managing the heat and fuel with the system of tubings that reads to me that the Fuel in involved with the tubing more that just reading gauges and relaying information to others.
also... this is the Animal Realm... which is not far from the pools that kicked off the whole Oil craze in SFW (TH17.5) since Yuuma hangs around there all the time... and this is a magical army making factory too so traditional methods might not be what is running it.
Furthermore lets looks what happened in the update before getting into the room:
- Kosuzu in close pursuit of Tsukasa and its working out for her
- in the Kiln room Tsukasa causes one of the Kilns to explode which forces Kosuzu to lose sight of Tsukasa and fall behind to avoid the explosion.
-the delay allows Tsukasa to set up an ambush in the next room.
I'd say we're being given a pretty good telegraph of which option to pick. and what is the consequece of the other one.
Tsukasa also, being the one to cause it. the Kosuzu's confidence in tubing is not high and is confident in shooting off Danmaku... knowing that, wouldn't Tsukasa think to set something up to play on that to her advantage?
and Kosuzu isn't as bad at tubing (which is still a part of fox magic, even if its the specialty of a subdivision.) considering that she could get through a keyhole without too much trouble and that is MUCH smaller comparatively to piping

[4] Follow her into the pipe network!
[15] Fire at the pipes and break them down!
If she was a kuda-gitsune, Kosuzu would have dived in after Tsukasa. But she wasn’t - and she wouldn’t play her games, not anymore.
She focused, firing a line of danmaku at the pipe Tsukasa had dived into - specifically targeting the joint between two sections. It dislodged, one end clattering to the floor, but Kosuzu saw the tube fox’s tail scrabble into the next section.
Fine, then. This place was a wreck already; saving Yumemi was more important than keeping damaged parts in place. Kosuzu fired danmaku at every joint and conduit she could see, dislodging more and more of the pipes, sending them all tumbling to the floor. More than a few required Kosuzu to duck and weave, losing her focused firing, but by that point the cascade had begun, and the pipes fell apart like a house of cards.
One stout pipe in the ceiling dislodged with a tidal burst of water, gushing into the room at such speed that the spray stung the kitsune’s face. She had to turn away, to shield herself and her grimoire from the spray. Tsukasa yelped from somewhere beneath her feet. Looking down, Kosuzu saw the kuda-gitsune still in fox form, scrabbling for purchase as the flood threatened to wash her down the drain.
Kosuzu focused. What were the movements again… you can set up a ‘trap’ of danmaku of increasing speed on a single area, such that everything will coalesce on one point at once.
The danmaku formed in concentric rings just around the drain. Tsukasa saw them coming, and hauled herself up even more desperately… but not quite fast enough. There was a flash of light, and a yelp of pain - when Tsukasa returned to humanoid form, her right leg was red and bruised.
Kosuzu leapt at the other fox with a burst of bullets, pushing her away from the remaining pipes. Tsukasa had no choice but to fall back, stumbling from trying to put weight on her injured leg. “You little wretch!” She hissed. “You think you’re going to stop me?!”
The tube-fox focused, summoning an array of spinning test tubes. They began emitting lasers out of their open ends, creating a sizzling field of danger for Kosuzu to weave through. Tsukasa scrambled down the hall with the added space, taking a turn into the next room. Kosuzu rushed to follow, squeezing through the lines of lasers as fast as she could.
The next room was slightly sunken into the ground, a few steps connecting it to the maintenance hallway. A series of workstations were arranged throughout the workspace, with brushes and other artist’s equipment scattered across and around them. The walls were lined with massive, cracked jars, oozing paint so thickly onto the floor that the gushing water was only slightly dislodging the technicolor sludge. The room was thick and heavy with fumes, making Kosuzu’s head spin.
Kosuzu felt a rush of suctioned air, clearing the pungent scent of the paints. She recognised the effect as a spell her false mother used, and whipped her head in the direction everything was being pulled. Tsukasa finished the spell by corking a test tube with her thumb, and turned to the kitsune, growling.
The tube fox lowered her other hand, spraying swollen bullets around Kosuzu and into the murky paint. The kitsune dodged the bullets aimed at her and the smaller pellets they burst into, but the ones that submerged before they reached her exploded beneath the surface, throwing up great splashes of pigments. The storm of color was impossible to see through, obscuring both the following danmaku and Tsukasa’s next move. There was no way to stay level and keep track of anything else - she needed to get up into the air, as far away from the colorful mire as she could.
As she ascended, she saw Tsukasa throw a test-tube at her. Initially, she thought Tsukasa had aimed it too high, and started to prepare a spell card in retaliation - but when she heard the glass shatter on the roof, the kitsune realized her mistake. Dozens of jars half her size or bigger were suddenly raining down, threatening to crush her. There was no time to dodge out of the way, or even try to weave through them, she just had to brace herself and try to power through -
- she blinked. She had suddenly been launched forward from where she had been, already passing between the rafters. She hastily braked to a full stop before she crashed into the ceiling. She heard the smash of the jars breaking below her, and whirled around to see what had happened.
A gap quietly closed, where she had come out. That must have been how she dodged the attack - Yukari’s spell must have gone off again.
Tsukasa was below her, looking confused at the shattered pots in the pooling paint. Her head started whipping around, trying to see where Kosuzu had gone. It was a prime opportunity to launch a sneak attack.
[ ] Approach cautiously, and stay out of sight.
[ ] Use the silence spell to mask her movements, and rush in aggressively.
oh thank goodness I was wrong!
This feels like the point should have gone to Kosuzu and not Tsukasa.
These are strikes, not points. Tsukasa is one strike closer to losing.
You’re right. It’s just been long enough since one of these I forgot what they meant. Oops.
[X] Use the silence spell to mask her movements, and rush in aggressively.
I'd say we should push the momentum now that Tsukasa is distracted
[X] Use the silence spell to mask her movements, and rush in aggressively.
The main reason I'm in support of this is that silence magic is one of Ran's techniques, while skulking about is more in line with Tsukasa's training. If we hit her in a rushdown, she won't have time to realize. Also, avoiding the more Tsukasa-like route seems to be the winning strategy. (With only one data point, though, I can't be certain. She could realize what we're doing and switch to anti-Ran strats.)
We're in a battle, which means it seems like it's almost spellcard time... I've been eagerly brewing up ideas.

Normally you want to be cautious against someone who specializes in underhanded tactics, but when they're already on the back foot, you don't want to risk giving them prep time.
... is what I think.

Going by the metanarrative, this is the best choice. Trying Tsukasa tactics is bad tactically as well because it comes from Tsukasa's sabotaged "training" that she knows how to counter.

agree with >>212196 and >>212198. additionally, tsukasa most likely didn't expect the gap, and would expect kosuzu to have snuck around, therefore she's probably wary of that and looking around for any sneak tactics. a direct attack when she's not ready for one would work to our advantage.

Bye bye Tsukasa
To add to this, the metanarrative of Kosuzu is also openness to learn new things and grow. For all Tsukasa is about, she is mostly focused on what she had in the past and not where she is going in the future. Kosuzu, by focusing on what she has learned since coming to Animal Hell, is countering Tsukasa solely because she has chosen to embrace knowledge and learning compared to Tsukasa, who fundamentally is the same fox that got dunked on by Yukari and Ran, even if she has picked up a few tricks since that time.

Only thing I fear is relatively lack of combat experience for Kosuzu compared to Tsukasa.
Note that our win goal isn't necessarily to end Tsukasa, but to slow/stop her. But this works anyways so...
[X] Use the silence spell to mask her movements, and rush in aggressively.
My biggest fear for this option is that this might put us in knife range.
But the biggest problem with the other option is that it gives Tsukasa time to think and plan as she looks for Kosuzu which is worse in my opinion.

I think this is wrong, but we have bells in our hair.
Kosuzu focused, recalling the words of the grimoire again. For the purposes of moving silently, creating a thin ‘bubble’ of silenced air is the same to those outside it as creating a whole sphere…
She focused, creating a bubble around her. The distant sounds of Chen’s battle fell silent, and all that was left was the sounds of Kosuzu herself.
There were small pieces of stone on the rafters, likely fallen from the roof. The kitsune picked one of the larger ones up, took a moment to steady her breath, and tossed it into the oozing paint.
And then, she leapt, leaving the bubble with a diving kick.
Tsukasa heard the splash of the rock, whipping her head around to look and leaving her wide open. Kosuzu’s shoes caught her in the back, drawing out a pained cry and sending the tube fox sprawling. Kosuzu pumped her fist as the other fox collapsed.
…Was there an orange glow around her? She saw her tail, half-wrapped around her side. But, wait, her tail wasn’t there-
Tsukasa rose from the muck with a spray of purple danmaku, forcing Kosuzu back. The kuda-gitsune sat up, her white clothes tie-dyed in an array of colors, and glared at the other fox.
“You… worthless… brat…” She spat a rainbow glob, before throwing her arm wide. “Have you considered yet that all your efforts won’t save that nekomata? One good hit, and your pet’s becoming a permanent resident of this realm, you know.”
“She’s not my pet… she’s my sister.” Kosuzu summoned another array of danmaku. “And if she thinks she can keep up in a fair fight, I’ll do whatever I can to help her.”
“Even if that means you miss the moment she dies?” Tsukasa saves a smirk. “The moment she realizes that all of this was for nothing, and you won’t even be there for her?”
Kosuzu hesitated… which was all her opponent needed. The paint broiled, danmaku bursting to the surface from the tube fox’s hand. With a sudden flash, Tsukasa changed form, becoming small and lithe. She shot up like a needle, the kitsune already reeling back to dodge the surprise attacks, and slithered through a hole into the floor above.
The kitsune panicked. Even if she could still get through the hole, she couldn’t fly and be in fox form at the same time. And if either of them knew where a real staircase was, they wouldn’t have been fighting here! She needed to keep chasing Tsukasa, even if she had to throw herself at the-
There was a single hole, big enough for her to crawl through as a regular fox. A desperate plan arose in her mind. It was stupid, and if she screwed it up there would be no catching up to Tsukasa… but it was the only chance Kosuzu had. She looked up at the roof, gulped, and rocketed up to it.
She focused, praying to whatever god might listen, as the roof got closer. And then… she shifted shapes. The momentum of her flight carried her up, halfway through the gap, and she stuck out her claws, digging deep into the carpet of the next floor.
She scrabbled up, claws scraping on the roofing as she clambered up to safety. She took a moment to gather her bearings. The room appeared to be an office space, lined with desks and blocky computers -
Tsukasa descended on her in fox form, snarling. The battle became a tangle of tooth and claw, the two foxes rolling atop each other. Tsukasa was double her weight and size, clawing and snapping at the juvenile fox with murderous intent. It was all Kosuzu could do to hold her back from a fatal strike.
Tsukasa bit down on the smaller fox’s foreleg, causing her to yelp in pain. Kosuzu squirmed, desperately trying to scrabble free, but the other’s fox’s grip was strong enough that her arm felt like it’d be ripped out of her socket. She managed a kick into the leg she’d injured earlier, drawing a yelp from Tsukasa and freeing her foreleg, but the moment she was upright the tube fox tackled her again. The two tumbled under one of the desks, fighting with bestial savagery.
Tsukasa bit at the talisman on the Kitsune’s ear, yelping in pain from a backlash of spiritual energy. Kosuzu saw her chance, and swung her whole body around, slamming Tsukasa’s back into one of the sides. The tube fox gasped in pain, curling up on herself - it was enough for Kosuzu to break free, rushing under the backboard and yanking on a mouthful of cables.
The monitor on top of the desk crashed down between the two foxes, giving Kosuzu enough time to get another desk between them and shift back. Tsukasa growled, returning to human form as well. “You stubborn little piece of trash…!”
Hearing the rage in Tsukasa’s voice, Kosuzu managed a smirk, despite the blood trickling down her ear and her ravaged arm. “Feeling trapped, ‘Mother’?”
Tsukasa groaned, reaching to her side. For a moment, she seemed speechless.
Kosuzu steadied herself, pointing with her good arm at Tsukasa. “You’re not going to escape this time. Chen’s going to hold out until Ran gets here… and I won’t let you get the chance to change that! So just-”
Click. Kosuzu’s words died in her throat. Snap. Click. Snap.
Tsukasa gave a slow grin, lifting the clasped test tube in her hand. “You were saying…?” She giggled, twirling the test tube around her fingers. "It's always this way, Koko. Every time you get your little delusions of grandeur, that you think there's some hope for you beyond my reach? This cute little thing will be here to put you back in your place."
Kosuzu gulped, stepping back as the tube fox advanced. “Y-you… you don’t scare me! I-I won’t-” Click. “I-I-I…”
The tube fox cackled. “Oh, you sound very convincing. What should I do with you this time? Drop you on one of the conveyor belts and get a big machine to crush you? Bury you ten feet in the ground where nobody will ever find you? Or maybe I really should wash you down the gutter where you belong… The possibilities are simply endless!” She raised her other hand, beginning to cast her spell. “Come on, Koko… it’s time for your punishment…”

Redo/Reimu is weird. It made me sympathize with Yachie, who I’d normally hate on principle, and soured me on Tsukasa, who I used to think was kind of cute in the girlfailure way, where it’s adorable how she thinks she can do politics and manipulation.
Right? Now when I see Chireiden art I'm like "is Myon holding the camera or something where is she?" Or like now when I see Ran and Chen art I think "Kosuzu should be with them..."

I'm pretty sure the tube is basically just a suck jar. Kosuzu won't simply escape the pull by running away.
>> There was a crackle in the air. It suddenly felt hard to breathe, an indescribable pressure emanating from all directions. Most of the mechanics were suddenly aflutter, looking around frantically for the source of the sudden tension. Chen and Reimu both knew better, sharing a worried look and turning in one particular direction.
>> Towards Yakumo Yukari. The pressure was emanating straight from her, power rippling out in waves. Whatever Ichi had said, it had set the sage off, and now she was utterly furious.
>> Reimu reached out, offering a steadying hand on the nekomata’s shoulder. She flinched at the initial contact, but slowly eased. Chen’s voice was hesitant and unsteady. “Wh-what’s happened?”
>> “Don’t know…” Reimu stepped forward, hearing the cat creep quietly behind her. As they were watching, Yukari started to storm off in some direction.
>> Ichi reached out, grabbing her arm and stopping her. Reimu flinched as a storm of gaps opened around Ichi, but… the fortune-teller remained unharmed. She said something to Yukari, and the latter hesitated from breaking free of her grip.
>> The two young girls watched, as the gaps slowly retracted. Reimu heard the tonal lift of Yukari asking a question, even if she didn’t hear the words - Ichi responded by brandishing some sort of pistol.
>> With a curt nod from the Sage of the Gap, the two split up, taking off in dramatically different directions. Reimu turned to Chen, who was visibly sweating.

Kosuzu wanted to run. She wanted to hide, she wanted to get away.
Fear was running through her veins like ice. The thought of being trapped in that test tube again, not just to be disciplined, but to be disposed of - the fear seized her throat, leaving Kosuzu struggling to breathe.
And yet… she found herself facing down Tsukasa, her determination holding regardless. Like the dying embers of her defiance were stoked by a source from outside herself. She grit her teeth, holding her ground, and slowly looked up to meet Tsukasa’s gaze.
“...N-no.” She spoke, fear rippling in her voice. “I-I won’t let you w-w-win. I-I’ll fight you, Tsukasa.”
There was a pause. A look of surprise passed over Tsukasa’s face, before she shook her head, tutting. “Now now, Koko, you’re in enough trouble as is. You don’t want me to do to you what I did to those red girls, do you…?”
The kitsune looked up. “Yumemi… Y-you…”
Tsukasa grinned. “We-ell, maybe it’ll be a good thing? She’ll be veeeeeeery careful about knives from now on, I promise you that.” The tube fox chuckled, tapping her dagger with the butt of her test tube. “I can only imagine how she’ll react when she finds out what happened to her sister!”
“S-sister…” Kosuzu’s face paled. “Wh-what did you do to Ichi?!”
“...They didn’t tell you? Ohhhh… I see.” The elder fox hummed in mock thought. “I didn’t think that would finish her off, but that bodes rather ill, doesn’t it? And after she went to all that effort to get that book for you…”
Kosuzu felt the words thud into her chest. The world around her started to spin. “I-Ichi… got the book back…?” She looked down at the book. “I-Ichi… she… she…”
The tube fox’s grin spread from ear to ear. “She died because of you, Kosuzu.”
The kitsune teetered. Tsukasa’s words struck at her very seams, stripping Kosuzu bare. The rest of the world faded away, leaving nothing but Kosuzu and the cackling laughter of her false mother. She sunk deeper and deeper, her legs threatening to give out beneath her.
Some part of her tried to reassure herself. That Ichi would be fine, that she must be fine, but… The last time she had seen Ichi felt like ages ago. Yesterday, before their rescue mission, when she’d offered a gentle smile and a reassuring hand.
Promise me you’ll be safe. That you won’t lose hope. Alright?
…Something within her stirred. Deep in her soul, deeper than Kosuzu had ever known, something ignited.
A ball of endless, burning rage.
“Ichi… got the book back. She got… my mother’s book back.” The air began to crackle, the room itself seeming to buckle and bend. Kosuzu took a step forward, locking her eyes on the other fox. “She came to help me, to protect me, from… from you… you… YOU!”
The rage burst out, a scream of manic fury consuming Kosuzu’s very being. She kicked off the ground, rocketing at the other youkai, and lunged for her throat.
Slowly, she brought her hand up to her neck. A long, deep cut was on the left side, where Kosuzu had managed to claw her. That… hadn’t been expected. Did she really care about this Ichi that much?
Still… she lifted the test tube, slowly, and smirked. The figure inside was unmistakable. “Hello, Kosuzu. Welcome back.”
The little fox’s claws scrabbled against the glass, desperate, but futile, banging with impotent rage. Tsukasa… managed to let out a slow, ragged laugh.
“Ah… ahahahahahhhhh! You… really had me going there, y’know?” She giggled, tipping the glass over so the little fox tumbled. “Ahhhhh… and to think I worried I’d never get another chance like this!”
For a moment there, she had been terrified - she still couldn’t settle. Something about Kosuzu’s anger, and the energy in the air… it brought back memories Tsukasa would rather forget. And not of Ran, surprisingly… but perhaps that was just the gap witch’s defenses in play.
She spun the test tube around her fingers as she flew through the office, looking for the next path up. The third door she opened revealed a hole through which she could see the city - Tsukasa locked on to it, flying over.
“Well, I’m sorry Kosuzu, but alas t’was all for nothing in the end.” She lifted the flask up, inspecting the little girl inside. “Woe is ye, and all tha-mmm?”
…she was still banging? The brat really was enraged, trying to break through the glass with nothing more than raw fury. This wasn’t like her at all… Tsukasa tipped the glass again, making her captive fall over once more. She rose to her feet yet again, yelling unheard words at her captor.
…It left Tsukasa ill at ease. This… usually worked better for reigning in the mutt’s behavior. She shook her head, trying to refocus. She needed to keep on track.
It was rather unpleasant, climbing out through the gap. Her aching back protested viciously, and she nearly dropped the tube Kosuzu was trapped in when her badly-battered leg was banged against a rock. She cursed, hauling herself up and out into the stale air of the city.
The roof only had one significant hole - the one above the station, echoing with the sounds of Saki’s tremendous blows. The rest of the damage was in dents and warping, most obviously the water tower itself, with one of the legs holding it up bent more like a knee. It held… for now. It wouldn’t take a lot to break it down for good.
“Now, let’s see, let’s see…” Tsukasa took a moment to scan the city skyline. A fast-moving blue glow caught her attention quickly - Yakumo Ran, almost certainly.
…She didn’t have a lot of time left. Enough time to bring the tower down, get the collar off, and run, but if Saki dragged her feet any longer, she’d really be sweating. …Still, she had the perfect distraction right in the palm of her hand.
She lifted the tube up, observing her little prisoner. The kit had huddled up in a ball, in the bottom of the test tube. She’d finally given up, it seemed. “See that little blue light? That’s your dear mother, only a few minutes away, I think. A pity she won’t get here in time to save either of you, hmmm?”
The tube fox took a moment to examine the skyline, seeking out a good place to send Kosuzu off to. The water-tower’s pipelines extended across the roof, and down towards the Sanzu River. Tsukasa grinned, waving the tube at the morbid waters.
“I think a swim in the Sanzu is the perfect mother-daughter bonding activity, don’t you agree Koko? Well, of course, that’s assuming she finds you. Maybe you’ll sink to the bottom and sleep with the fishes instead!”
…Still nothing. Still huddled up, even when Tsukasa gave the test tube a shake. The older fox wished she had a little more time to crush the girl more personally… but for now she’d have to send her off with a smile.
Tsukasa looked back, sighting up her range. When she was confident she could make the distance, she reared back, aiming to throw it as straight as a dagger. With a full-body swing, she sent the test tube flying, whirling off into the distance.
She shaded her eyes, trying to spot where the tube landed. “Good bye, Kosuzu. I’m sorry, your precious mother’s not going to come save Chen in time. Too bad, so sa-”
A spray of danmaku struck her in the back, Tsukasa yelping from the pain. She spun around, ready to confront her attacker.
And her jaw dropped.
“Wrong.” Kosuzu glared at her, furious. “She’s coming right here.”
The kitsune managed a smirk. “What, did you forget?” She lifted the hairpin, Tsukasa’s eyes drawn to it like a magnet. “I grabbed this for a reason, you know. Even before I learned how you ruined my life, I knew deep down you were rotten.”
The kuda-gitsune shook her head, eyes wild and whirling. “N-no, it’s not possible. You shouldn’t be able to- you can’t-!”
Kosuzu’s gaze turned steely. “You thought I’d just give up because you had me in there?! You can’t tell me what to do anymore!” She lifted her hand, focusing. “It’s over, Tsukasa! You won’t escape my mother, and you won’t escape me!”
The grimoire rose up in front of her, glowing with orange energy. Kosuzu focused, and began to cast her spell card.

Your probably right, but I’m trying to aim for an Awakening here, and the Suzunaan Sign is the one most closely tied to her past life.

If we want to lean into the Re/Awakening, it’ll come naturally. Don’t try to force things when it’s not necessary.
Tsukasa is one hit from going down. I don’t think the Re/Awakening power boost is 100% necessary to win this fight, and that’s assuming that the simple act of using a Spell Card doesn’t trigger it in the first place.

Hmmmm, which spell card type to go with, for the type I would say to avoid is the suzunaan one mainly on account of "but weaving through the narrow gaps in the orderly attacks." considering that the Kuda-Gitsune that Tsukasa is specializes in fitting through tight spaces.

{X}Notebook Sign ~ Writing on the Walls
Danmaku in the shape of various Kanji characters float around … but more appear when the target looks in different directions, so the more the target jinks about, the more danmaku appear, but if the target moves smoothly in one direction consistently it doesn’t spawn as much. (so in gameplay terms whenever you would change your directional input, it would generate some danmaku in the direction that you imputed, but if you held that input down then more wouldn’t appear. Requiring decisive playing to avoid being overwhelmed.)

anyways, here are the other ones that were posted soon after my post there:
>{X} Tome Sign: Bibliophile's Bookshelf
>Kosuzu pulls out a book, and starts reading through it at a rapid pace, words literally flying off the page with how fast she reads. The words themselves are chains of connected bullets, and they'll dance around in spirals around the target like eels before closing in to try and deliver a wordy walloping.
>"A spell that'll give you the feeling of a book capturing your attention. Careful to not let yourself be surrounded, or you'll go from getting lost in a book to getting trapped in it!"
>{X} Faux Sign: Fox's Duplicity
>Kosuzu changes into animal form and summons a levy of slave bullets shaped like foxes as well, then all of them start running around midair. (The actual movements aren't too complicated, just running in basic geometric shapes, but there's a lot of them.) Kosuzu will try and blend into the waves of foxes, and if the wrong one is shot down it explodes into a wave of bullets.
>"A fanatastical flurry of fluffy foxes fly freely! Kosuzu invented this card to try and burn a few calories to better follow her mother's suggested ideal body type for sneaking through tight spaces."
>{X} Recollection: Claustrophobia
>A disorienting spellcard about fitting into tight spaces, the target is bombarded with fox magic in order to throw them off balance, before tight (like, approaching LOLK-level tight) rings of Danmaku appear around them. Unless the target is a master of highly precise dodging, the far better option is to get exactly in the middle of all the bullets and hold yourself in a small safe spot. The current bullets fade away after the ring tightens enough, and a new ring appears, forcing them to move to the new safe spot. (Harder difficulties also add Kosuzu firing some lines of bullets sort of like Danmaku Paranoia to make the shrinking harder.)
"You will learn how it feels to be trapped."
>{X} Poison Sign: Illustration of the Sessho-Seki
>Kosuzu throws out a piece of paper with a section of the myth of Tamamo-no-Mae written on it. Wherever it stops, a huge bullet is positioned. A barrage of the dreaded curvy lasers, designed to evoke Tamamo-no-Mae's nine tails, attempts to drive the targets into the faux-killing-stone. Just before the spell ends, the 'stone' splits in half and attempts to 'crush' the target.
>{X} Ancient Tale: Kuzu-no-Ha's Farewell Poem
>A series of kanji from the poem appear, and burst into masses of ivy that move away from Kosuzu. Kosuzu spends the entire spell card moving around to make herself harder to hit, make the ivy less predictable, and evoke the image of Kuzunoha fleeing back to Shinoda after being caught.
>{X}Fox-Dragon: The Telling of Masaki's 999 Lives
>Kosuzu produces eight prayer beads with "Even thus can a beast conceive a heart to know truth" written on them, as in the Hakkenden, the novel Masaki comes from (although they're not actually connected to Masaki at all). More pop up at random and burst into fast-flying bullets, representing the 999 lives she saved. Finally, an image of the fox-dragon she became as a reward spirals into the centre of the target area and then bursts into a pattern evoking a splash.
__________________________
>And then, since one of Kosuzu's running gags in Forbidden Scrollery was misunderstanding news from distant countries, we could probably throw in fox tales from elsewhere, too.
>{X} Water Sign: Fox Confessor's Flood Song
>Kosuzu pretends to read aloud from a Ukrainian bible, evoking the image of the fox posing as a priest. The spell card works similarly to Knockout in Three Steps, but moving downward instead of outward. Bullets appear in sequence from near Kosuzu, attempting to force the target away, then a huge flood appears at the 'bottom of the screen' (as it were), thus putting the target into the role of the wolf who is fooled into throwing itself into the ocean.
>(I really only know this one from a song based on it, hence the name I gave the card)
>{X} Fox Sign: Fabill of Lowrence and the Lion King
>Kosuzu and danmaku in the image of a wolf chase the target around, leaving bullets in their wake (think Green-Eyed Monster). When the spell is about to end, or Kosuzu successfully corners the target, a huge danmaku lion 'eats' her, and ideally catches the target as well - thus recreating Henryson's story, where a wicked feudal lord of an animal kingdom dies and his equally wicked bastard son inherits his land, but before he can enjoy his reign, he's summoned before the king's court, sent alongside a dimwitted wolf to track down a fugitive, and ultimately executed for his crimes.
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
Agree with the majority here- we need to catch her at her weakest. Tsukasa's never bothered to take interest in our reading hobby as far as I remember, but she's good with narrow gaps and definitely knows a thing or two about fox magic.
Now, for the fun part...
Some preliminary ideas. Consider these all as book signs, I just like slightly fancier flairs.
{X} Murder Mystery: And Then There Were None
Kosuzu takes on the appearance of her previous life's human form, and summons nine danmaku slaves with the same appearance around the area, before scattering about and mingling with her duplicates, leaving trails of bullets in their wake. You can try shooting at them all to find the real one, but if you shoot them all you'll be left with none. The real trick being Kosuzu swapping out with a tenth copy partway through.
Never trust a Kitsune to play fair. ...Wait, what do you mean this name's already taken?
{X} Historical Wave: Fall of the Berlin Wall
Kosuzu splices the arena in half with a stone wall that rises from the floor, before pushing it down to crush her foes like slamming a book onto a bug. If you can manage to focus your fire, you may be able to create a safe space to stand in, but she'll keep summoning walls while the debris will just keep piling up on itself.
I guess it was pretty poorly constructed, after all...
{X} Atlas: Weight of the World
When this spell starts, you'll find yourself burdened with the weight of a heavy tome of maps strapped to your back, slowing your movements tremendously whilst Kosuzu hovers above and tosses some real doorstoppers down to clobber you with.
Spells that mess with your controls are no fair! I'm going to look in this book you gave me for a map to the Hakurei Shrine, and complain to the maiden!
I do plan to write more after some sleep but I just had to throw a few down now.
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
The choice says the book signs have obvious weaknesses... to those who've read the original stories. I haven't gone back to check, but I recall Tsukasa being pretty dismissive of Kosuzu's reading habit back at the beginning. I suppose that could've been feigned, but it seems like a better option than directly foxy magic that she's probably familiar with or narrow gaps that she now specialises in.
And oh, hey, there's my old spell card suggestions. Thank you, >>212282! Hm. The Kuzunoha one was my favourite, but a spell card based on running away seems unfitting here. Lowrence doesn't seem thematically quite right either, but could be played for irony. Mae, considering what we've since learned, would probably be a nice mirror-punishment (although, uh, I don't think the stone splitting open should have happened yet in this timeline, oops). So would beating Tsukasa with a flood like she's been trying to cause, but that could be... counterproductive. Masaki seems nicely appropriate to Kosuzu's desire to rise above and be more proactively heroic. So it comes down to Mae or Masaki, I guess? But maybe Lowrence or Kuzunoha...
Well, fiddling with the names a little now that the primary categories have been established...
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
- {X} Book Sign: Illustration of the Sessho-Seki
- {X} Ancient Tale: Kuzu-no-Ha's Farewell Poem
- {X} Book Sign: The Telling of Masaki's 999 Lives
- {X} Book Sign: Fox Confessor's Flood Song
- {X} Book Sign: Fabill of Lowrence and the Lion King
And then five is already quite enough, but I've been reading up on Ainu fox myths lately and might have the beginnings of something there... but it'd involve a rainstorm, which we still probably don't want, and anyway I was thinking I might work with that basis to try my hand at an omake at some point. What's the proper etiquette on that, by the way?
(Also, looking back, it annoys me that I've structured some as having a timer-end finishing move instead of repeating patterns like Spell Cards normally have. At least it takes only a little imagination to rework those as the end of each iteration of the pattern instead of the Spell as a whole...)
Hitting a tube fox with "predictable but frustratingly narrow gaps" is a laughably bad idea, and I'm not 100% confident Kosuzu can outfox her (yet), so...
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
What I can gather from here, is that (as many have pointed out) Suzunaan signs with narrow gaps against someone that specifically can bypass very narrow things, would be the wrong call.
Fox signs would fare more or less the same since its techniques common to foxes, so keeping that in mind:
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
I like the other names, especially the ones related to Tamamo no Mae and Kuzunoha. The former because of the irony of Tsukasa being metaphorically defeated by her own mother. The latter because of Abe no Seimei, allegedly Kuzunoha's son and very powerful mage/onmyodo.
- {X} Book Sign: Illustration of the Sessho-Seki
- {X} Ancient Tale: Kuzu-no-Ha's Farewell Poem
I'll add:
- {X} Book sign: Legend of the Night Parade
(Could arguably be Suzunaan Sign too, another callback to Forbidden Scrollery)
- {X} Ancient Legend: Abe-no-Seimei's Divination
A spell card that wouldn't be out of place in Megumu's arsenal: lots of stars forming the shapes of constellations and then traveling everywhere at random.
(Based on Abe no Seimei, again, son of Kuzunoha. He could command shikigami, use magic, exorcise spirits, dispel curses and predict fortunes and future events. I like thinking that Kosuzu could eventually become something like Abe no Seimei: descended from a kitsune, and possibly proficient in shikigami and magic usage?)
- {X} Heirloom: Hyacinthoides Scripta
Columns of bullets form in the forms of vines with bluebells dangling from them, "breaking" after a couple seconds so they rain from above.
(More or less self-explanatory if you've been following the story so far ^_^)
For "Suzunaan sign" spellcards, I add:
- {X} Infinity: Library of Babel
Composed of a static hexagonal grid (think Yachie's spellcard) where books appear and disappear gradually around the edges of the screen. The books shoot in a fixed circular pattern, think about the "books" in the EoSD stage 4 and you know what I mean.
(Reference to Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges. The "Library of Babel" is a (basically) infinite library that contains every possible book in existence: every possible combination of letters and punctuation signs. The joke is that most of it is indecipherable, incoherent and useless, but could contain a book that holds the truth of the universe, the same book in every known language and in every unknown language, the autobiography of an archangel, everything. As long as it's possible, it exists in the library.)
For "Fox sign" spellcards, I add:
- {X} Mystic Sign: Fox's Wedding
From the center of the screen, a big static bullet shoots short lasers every couple of seconds (think Unzan's lasers in UFO). Meanwhile from the sides of it, danmaku falls mimicking rain (similar to Nitori's second spell card in MoF, Kappa's flash flood or something like that)
("A Fox's Wedding": it's said that a fox is marrying whenever rain falls while the sun is visible.)
And as a bonus:
{X} Yin Yang "Seiman-Daimon"
This one is weird, but let me explain:
A) It's Chen's first spellcard in PCB (That's the name in lunatic)
B) It might be contained in Ran's grimoire itself?
C) Seiman can either mean pentagram or can refer to Abe no Seimei.
D) A daimon is a type of large family crest (usually displayed during war).
So: related to Abe no Seimei (as I said above, I hope Kosuzu can become a powerful spellcaster like he was), related to Chen, and with a "family crest" meaning (probably Seimei's but still.)
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
-{Book Sign: Was it all the work of Youkai?}
Sort of unoriginal in the naming (As it just the name of the book the Akyuu wrote as Agatha Chris Q. in chapter 40) but I did like Forbidden Scrollery. Kosuzu might not remember this story since most of her past memories are still locked but if she did it would be the perfect counter to Tsukasa, since the story it is about hasn't been released yet in this timeline. I also find the fact that the time travel that Tsukasa was so dismissive of and punished Kosuzu when she mentioned it to her is the very weapon that defeats her (or at least stops her here) to be refreshingly ironic.
As for how the spell card looks... not sure but it probably should have something to do with the vanishing body case with the maid witness and various different youkai who might be able to do it, including Bake-danuki and Tanuki (not sure the difference between them to be honest). If someone can describe how this spell card would look I would be very interested in reading it as I don't think I could come up with a good description of how it would look.
To everyone voting for a spell card related to Tamamo-no-Mae, please remember that Tsukasa is her daughter, and as such, probably knows what happened. Given the weakness of Book Signs, I suspect using the tale of how Tsukasa’s mom was defeated against her is a Bad Idea.
>>212289
On the other hand, a part of it that probably hasn't even happened yet - the stone splitting open - might catch her off guard.
But yeah, that is a really good point.
I'm pretty sure it was literally just me who brought it up? Plenty of people are voting for book signs, but I don't think anyone has actually seconded my Tamamo-no-mae write-in.
[x] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
{X} Ancient Tale: Kuzu-no-Ha's Farewell Poem
{X} Murder Mystery: And Then There Were None
{X} Ancient Legend: Abe-no-Seimei's Divination
Some awesome Spell Cards! I'm going to throw my own into the pool (Despite them being wildly unfitting... but hey, the more out there they are the less likely Tsukasa's going to know how to dodge them! JK...)
Meridian Sign: (Ko)Suzurainty
Based off of Blood Meridian's The Judge, this spell would focus on "capturing the essence" of the target in some way in a book and using it against them. Reference to The Judge's book, wherin he catalogues what he finds in drafts and destroys them afterwards. Not too sure what would fit... Maybe Kosuzu fires danmaku that tries to coax the target into standing still for a portrait - and if Kosuzu succeeds in drafting the portrait, the timer extends and the danmaku becomes much more difficult and focused? (Knowledge is power and all) Danmaku could be themed around Blood Meridian itself, like a "legion of horribles" descending as danmaku firing arrows and charging with lances.
Sumer Sign: Bull of Heaven
Based off of the epic of Gilgamesh, the most ancient (surviving) story written down on earth! This one is based off of Ishtars threat as well as the bull itself. In the first part, many danmaku spirits float around and go about business like the living, like a crowded party. They cant be killed because, uh, they're already dead. danmaku passes through them. Then comes the bull from heaven, whose first set of attack is danmaku fissures cause by his snorting. the fissures cause the spirits to "Fall", killing them and mkaing them release danmaku. The bull then charges wildly around. After receiving enough damage, the bull is killed, but its heart is removed from its body and continues shooting streams of danmaku in a pumping pattern.
and finally:
Total Tsukasa Death: Kill Tsukasa. Behead Tsukasa. Roundhouse kick Tsukasa into the concrete. Slam dunk Tsukasa into a trashcan. Crucify that rancid tube fox. Defecate in Tsukasa's food. Launch Tsukasa into the sun. Grill Tsukasa at an Izakaya. Toss Tsukasa into an active volcano. Urinate into Tsukasa's gas tank. Judo throw Tsukasa into a wood chipper. Twist Tsukasa's head off. Report Tsukasa to CPS. Karate chop Tsukasa in half. Curb stomp Tsukasa. Trap Tsukasa in quicksand. Crush Tsukasa in the trash compactor. Liquefy Tsukasa in a vat of acid. Eat Tsukasa. Dissect Tsukasa. Exterminate Tsukasa PC-98 style. Stomp Tsukasa's skull with tengu geta. Cremate Tsukasa in the fires of former hell. Lobotomize Tsukasa. Drown Tsukasa in The Sanzu. Vaporize Tsukasa with a master spark. Kick Tsukasa down the stairs of Hakugyokurou. Feed Tsukasa to Rumia. Slice Tsukasa with the hairpin.
Oh, hey! Forgot I posted those designs. Faux sign was actually a beta for ATTWN. Neat seeing it!
anyway, more book signs:
{X} Chivalrous Tale: Hero Fights the Wind Giants.
Kosuzu summons a veritable army of nyuudo to rain down fists upon her opponent while firing a few simple patterns of bullets, each giant strong enough to brush off any retaliatory fire. Unfortunately, they're really just an illusion barely capable of causing any harm, style over substance, meant to trick the opponent into focusing on them instead of Kosuzu.
It's all well and good to tell a famous story, but how are we supposed to fit windmills indoors?
{X} Story of Peace: Beast that Broke War
The area becomes a warzone as clashing bullets shaped like warriors fly towards each other from opposite sides, breaking upon contact. It's messy, but there is a safe spot near a grand wooden horse slowly rolling from one side to the other. However, it's unwise to stick too close to it, as a torrent of bullets form inside of it until they burst out at the end of the spell when it reaches the other side.
"If you're going to throw your lot in with a horse spirit, why not take a horse of your own as a gift?"
{X} Labyrinth: Lost in a Good Book
A survival spellcard. Kosuzu summons a maze with walls of paper arises around the enemy, seemingly folding space to create it, and then the walls begin to slowly tighten around you. To escape, you can't just blindly rush through. You need to carefully study the words written upon the walls, as they contain instructions to the path to freedom.
What a scam! I got trapped in a maze and there wasn't even a Minotaur, just this lousy t-shirt!
something I've been trying to do with most of these cards is finding ways to cross books with foxlike elements, like guile heros, disadvantaging the opponent, or trickery. Seems like a good intersection between her two natures.

spellcards that I like from other comments
- {X} Ancient Tale: Kuzu-no-Ha's Farewell Poem
- {X} Poison Sign: Illustration of the Sessho-Seki
- {X} Tamamo-no-mae's Killing Stone
It's not the best idea I've had but it made me want to write one while reading all the comments
- {X} Mistic Sign: The Legendary Kitsune of Tsugaru
Based on the story chen told about how Ran and Yukari won against shirohime.
Sacred fires fall from the sky, which when they collide create a large amount of danmaku in a random and very quickly, while zigzag lasers appear that cut the sacred fires that are in the air, creating the same effect as on the ground, all this while Kosuzu creates a wall of danmaku ready to finish off Tsukasa.
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.

Just going to signal boost some of my favorite suggestions:
{X} Murder Mystery: And Then There Were None
{X} Ancient Tale: Kuzu-no-Ha's Farewell Poem
{X} Infinity: Library of Babel
{X} Sumer Sign: Bull of Heaven
{X} Chivalrous Tale: Hero Fights the Wind Giants.
I liked all of these, I just tried to pick my five favorites. Great work to everyone so far. Loved seeing the literary and mythological references to some famous stories!
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
{X} Murder Mystery: And Then There Were None
Flandre hasn't used spellcards yet in this timeline, we can claim the copyright first!
>>212282 here
I have an alternate name for my suggestion (Notebook Sign ~ Writing on the Walls)
{X} Scrapbook collection ~ Taunts for the Shrine Maiden
(might even count as a name for the higher difficulty version or something. XP )
and hopefully this isn't jynxing it or anything, but I hope if we do manage to pull off another shut out on Tsukasa that we get a scene when Ran arrives, but its with both Chen and Kosuzu sitting together as the conquering heroes atop their fallen foes
{X} Murder Mystery: And Then There Were None
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
Cmon.... We're so close to another perfect clear. I need to think on what kind of spell card to use, but I think the Suzunaan cards are the way to go.
We should try to push Kosuzu into a reawakening by highlighting the contrast between her current life and past life.
Scratch that. I forgot about the whole pipe-fox thing.
>>212303
I'm reminded of the first (spellcard) duel in Y/Y, vs. Parsee. If you remember, there was some back and forth between Sword Sign vs Bird Sign, but what ultimately won out was the descriptions of each one's specialties (Sword was obviously better vs Spiders, Bird was better vs Parsee, so we went Bird.)
The descriptions here have an evident winner. Tsukasa is a bonafide master at getting through tight spaces, and she probably knows every vulpine trick from her past. Books, on the other hand, are something she's never really focused on, so she won't get the references to famous stories like Don Quixote.
I might do some cards for the other two types though, just for fun and in case we have a chance for them later!
Counting to >>212302:
Main Choice:
[1] Suzunaan Signs! Spell cards with intricate order in their design, based on the duties of a book-keeper. The difficulty in them came not from seeing the safe spots in the chaos, but weaving through the narrow gaps in the orderly attacks.
[17] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
[1] Youkai Signs! Her magic as a fox and her nature as a youkai brought out in its most direct form. Generally based on techniques common to foxes, at least at this point.

I'm shocked you actually tallied up all of these things holy crap.
-{X} Ancient Legend: Abe-no-Seimei's Divination
Anyway, I'm late to the party, here are my ideas:
[X] Book Signs! Spell cards based on stories and other things she’d read, as well as wordplay and the like. Knowing the stories themselves were often very helpful in figuring out the spell card’s tricks.
-{X} Hyakki-Yagyo: March in The Capital
A confusing, chaotic attack based on the chaos of the Night Parade. Apparitions spring forth, firing off small patterns that add up and overlap to create a chaotic, confusing wave of danmaku emulating the chaos of the Hyakki-Yagyo.
- {X} Onmyo sign: Seimei's Pentagram
A pattern of pentagrams based on the legends of Abe-No-Seimei. Utilizing lesser shikigami (the OG paper dolls), the opponent should be wary, lest they find themselves boxed in at the center of Seimei's pentagram.
- {X} Onmyo sign: Doman's Lattice:
A pattern of lattices designed to box in the opponent, leaving them open for a central strike (a laser, maybe?)
A lot of these, I got inspiration from Nioh 2, which coincidentally has all of these elements in the story; the Night Parade causing chaos in the capital, Abe-No-Seimei, and Ashiya Doman. And when you fight him, Doman loves spamming a lightning laser from his lattice.
yeah, Its a rename so it goes in the same category as Notebook sign.
Though book sign is basically the closest fit of the three choice for the spellcard. it fits in the 'you have to know the story to see the trick' part... but its from Kosuzu's own experience rather than something she read. (and so right now only 3, maybe 4 people could have at least a clue on what the trick is from the name: Reimu, Akyuu, and Kosuzu who were there at various points. Marisa and Youmu might've heard about ti from Reimu and Akyuu respectivly, but those two didn't have the full picture and thus the second-hand explaination would be similarly lacking...)
Though funnily enough despite being on the short end of it when it actually happened... the way I envisioned the spellcard Reimu (Talisman.) would actually have the easiest time with it.
Hello I made art for this series, I thought it looked silly with the immaterial children, Marisa isn't there cause she's jumping Reimu after Youmu
The spell card came to her from her past life. One spell card in particular. Something Tsukasa would never predict.
It had been little more than an idea as Motoori. Something that she’d always wanted to try, but required more power than any human could create, never mind its nature - if she’d ever pulled it off, a beating from Reimu would have been letting her off lightly.
It probably still demanded more than any one-tailed fox could provide, as well - and yet, Kosuzu felt oddly comfortable with it. She was somehow certain, completely, that its power was within reach.
She raised her hands, and cast her spell.
[Scroll Sign “Legend of the Night Parade”]
Her fingertips began to drip, with dark, ichorous ink. She threw her arms wide, scattering droplets around the field. From the spilled ink formed monsters, artistic depictions of youkai in dozens of shapes.
Tsukasa stared in horror, as all manner of colorful living paintings formed around her. The constructs were small and consisted largely of basic tsukumogami, little more than household objects with legs ramming and kicking the tube fox. She fired off a round of shots to disperse them, but the constructs burst into inky danmaku that flew for her again.
The beasts were still quickly dealt with, largely dispersed by a spray of shots. But to Tsukasa’s horror, the ink once again began to pool around her, this time forming into youkai the size of dogs. “What… what is this?!”
The kitsune felt a vicious grin forming on her face. “Oh, you don’t recognise it? It’s the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons. Not something you expected the dumb little kit to know?” Kosuzu’s voice sounded… much more mature than it normally was. “One of my personal favorites, from my past life. Perhaps the most powerful youma book I ever held.”
Tsukasa managed to clear the second wave, but her breathing was starting to get ragged, not helped when the air became thick and smoky. As she doubled over coughing, a third, larger wave began to leap atop her, clawing and biting.
Kosuzu smiled. “Finding it hard to breathe, Tsukasa? That’s the enenra. He helped me out a bit in my past life… and got me into trouble, too.” She stepped forward. Tsukasa seemed… smaller, or at least shorter than her, as larger and larger creatures started joining the assault.
Out of the corner of her eye, Kosuzu saw it. Her tail - or rather, her tails, eight crystalline structures spreading out from behind her. The Bluebell Grimoire was spread open before her, surrounded by the glowing crystals as well. She reached out to touch it, murmuring under her breath. “Youma books… is that it?”
The tube fox clawed her way up, trying to escape the ongoing pile-on. “No… no no no no NO!” A bomb spellcard went off, scattering the ink creatures in a spray of purple daggers. Tsukasa leapt out of the pile, and cast another bomb, this time firing it’s hundreds of daggers directly at the kitsune.
They would never reach their destination. Some form of latent comprehension kicked in, Kosuzu’s hands reaching into… something and spreading it out. A gap formed right in front of her, and the daggers flew in, harmlessly spinning into the void.
…But not the void she expected - it was clearly different, with entirely wrong colors compared to the realm that had once held the Hakurei Shrine. Kosuzu stared at it - rather than being purple, it was a deep blue, the color of the evening sky. And where Yukari’s usual gaps had red eyes, this gap instead had orange ones.
Once again, as the bomb was exhausted, her mind knew what motions to take. The gap closed, exactly as she wanted it to. …Some perk of her Re/Awakening, clearly, but why?
Tsukasa stared at the space where the gap had been, shivering from fear. “Y-you, you can…?!” She turned and ran, screaming as she dived into the hole above the station.
Anything to get away from another gap witch.
Outside was no good, both of those horrid kitsune were there - but hiding in the factory was just a slower death with monsters like that around.
She had to scramble back as the two combatants clashed right near her. As she turned to run, she saw her exit - the tunnel for the subway train, the one that hadn’t collapsed. It was the perfect thing - something that’d let her get distance and speed at the same time, without being spotted from outside. She quickly righted herself, speeding for the hole as fast as she could.
She was soon surrounded by the darkness of the tunnel, the lights that would normally illuminate her way broken and dimmed. Tsukasa slowed to take a moment, both for her eyes to adjust, and to cough out more of the inky blackness she’d inadvertently swallowed.
“Going somewhere?”
The dark path ahead of her was suddenly supplanted by the red glare of the city again, forcing Tsukasa to shield her eyes. She stumbled back, whimpering, as Kosuzu emerged from a gap.
Or the thing that had once been her, at least. The figure that stepped out still looked like Kosuzu in some ways, but the eight crystalline tails brought with them an air of regality Tsukasa could scarcely comprehend. With her venomous glare and those gaps… it brought a primal terror into Tsukasa, one she had hoped to forget. Her sheer presence meant Tsukasa felt ill just looking at her.
The kitsune stepped forward, growling. “Seven. years. Seven long years you tried to break me. And now you think you can run away and hide? No, ‘mother’. The story of Kudamaki ends here and now.” She kept approaching, as the tube-fox scrabbled back, her protests devolving into incoherent babbling. “Besides… my spell isn’t finished.”
On the far side of the gap, the remaining magical ink regathered into a congealed orb, hovering behind her pursuer. Tsukasa gibbered as a single, massive youkai emerged from the mix. Where most of the beasts before had been colorful and intricate, this creature was simply black as pitch, with a long, serpentine body. It snaked through the gap and into the tunnel, hungrily chasing the fleeing kuda-gitsune.
Tsukasa kept flying, trying to make it back to the station. All the while, the hungering serpent rushed after her, its drooling maw spreading as wide as the tunnel would allow. Tsukasa tried another bomb spellcard, but the dragon simply swallowed her danmaku, not even slightly slowing down.
At last, she saw the light of the station, only a couple dozen meters away. She sped off for it, desperately trying to reach the light…
Even Saki paused, turning to look. Every instinct in Chen’s body told her this was the perfect time for a sneak attack, but it was all she could do to try and catch her breath. [Her right arm had suffered fractures in both her humerus and ulna, she had at least 78 lacerations from debris. Counting her bruises was a matter of questions such as if her aching left side counted as seventeen small bruises, or one large one. Even though the distraction would likely last less than ten seconds, that was more than enough time to cast some mending spells and stop herself from literally falling apart.]
The sound was accompanied by desperate screaming. Chen’s ears quickly traced the source to the tunnel she had seen Tsukasa flee down. The tube fox was running like death itself was chasing her.
[That proved an apt simile.] As Tsukasa stepped towards the light, the darkness seemed to follow her out, a midnight-black serpent racing after her. The fox tried to escape, but the mouth of the tunnel and the maw of the beast reached her at the same time, the latter snapping around her.
The beast reared up, continuing to slither out of the tunnel. Two great wings spread from its sides, a wall of inky blackness filling the room. [Now that she could see it more clearly, it appeared to be made out of some sort of enchanted liquid. It was likely a construct of some sort, in the form of a great dragon - but who could have cast it?]
The dragon began to glow with light from within, and her instincts screamed with danger. She started to run, moving to shield Yumemi and the otter with her body… only for someone resplendent with orange light to step in front of her. [Ran? Initial assessment suggested it was more than 98% likely to be Ran or a relative, but when she threw her hands wide, an azure gap formed. And no heretofore unknown member of Ran’s family would have access to Yukari’s power.] Chen huddled close, as the wyrm exploded in light.
A kaleidoscope of colorful, liquid danmaku rained down, destroying any wolves that weren’t already running for cover. The rain of ink droplets thundered down around her, cracking the stonework with sheer weight and force. The whole building shook, with the incredible force of the attack - but the four behind the gap remained unharmed.
[As the dust cleared, Chen focused, looking through the rubble to see who had saved them. The face she saw… even as someone who understood the phenomenon, seeing the transformation with her own eyes strained her comprehension.]
“K-Kosuzu?!” The nine-tailed kitsune turned to her, giving a smile.
“Chen… Yumemi… I’m here.”
Fox is kill!
Next update and vote are coming later tonight, but first, I wanted to say a few things.
Firstly, wow, thank you to >>212310. I'm genuinely starting to lose track of all the people who've done fanart for this story. Just in this arc, we've had Kosuka (who also did the promotional art for this update), Asutnima, the chase scene, the stand against the wolves, this piece, the photoshop tube fox in vase, maybe more... and that's not even counting the omakes!
Thank you all, again, you've been such a wonderful reward for this fun little what-if.
Speaking of rewards, the halloween contest I've been hosting has come to an end. I'll be making two shorts for it, which may cut into time making this story. But I'll make sure we make a brisk pace towards the conclusion of this arc, so you all have something really meaty to chew over. Which Marisa to be I imagine will be an absolute shitshow of the highest order, so don't let me down, alright?
Woohoo! Incredibly fititng she finishes her fight with Tsukasa with the Hyakki Yagyo. Now the only thing I'm wondering...will there be another Pyre?
Kosuzu clapped her hands shut, closing the gap behind her. She took a moment to examine the room.
For the moment, it seemed like their various adversaries were gone or defeated. Even Saki seemed stunned, half-buried under a piece of fallen roofing on the side of the room. And at the very center of the room, a figure lay still - a small, white fox youkai. Kosuzu floated over, taking a moment to examine her.
The white fox was utterly unconscious, sprawled out on the station floor. For a moment, she seemed merely reminiscent of Tsukasa - a young woman with similar features, but more beautiful and regal, to the point that Kosuzu struggled to reconcile her with the Tsukasa she knew. But it seemed there was something almost iridescent about the fox - the slightest tilt of her head caused the craven tube-fox she recognized to appear in the white fox’s place.
…A boundary, perhaps? Could she see those now? It seemed so strange to consider, and yet the result seemed so natural, as well. …Why did she have Yukari’s power?
She shook her head, trying to clear it. Whatever was happening, the practiced ease with which she was doing it all-but confirmed it came with her Re/Awakened state. Which meant she was on a timer. She didn’t know how long it’d last…and there was something she had to find out.
She reached out into the gaps again. Slowly, they appeared around her, each one revealing different scenes. A different train station, with bisected haniwa crawling to support each other. A sodden red-haired woman with a dripping scythe, examining a winged girl who was twitching on the ground. A group of rabbit spirits, completely unaware of her eyes upon them. A taotie, who saw the gap and stared at her with a slack jaw.
And then… a hospital bed. With an older, red-headed girl sitting atop it. She looked into the gap, surprised by its presence… but gave a gentle smile, and a thumbs-up.
Relief washed over Kosuzu, like a wave… followed by wracking pain. The gaps she’d opened snapped shut, the little fox collapsing as her faux-tails dissipated. Chen and Yumemi rushed up to her, stopping her from falling down completely. “I got you, I got you.”
Kosuzu looked up at her sister, giving a weak smile. Then it faded, when she saw Chen’s arm, the bones broken into a shape that made Kosuzu feel ill just to look at. “Ch-Chen, your arm-”
“It’ll be okay, Suzu.” Chen managed a pained, but sincere smile. “We’ll be fine now, I’m sure of it.”
Yumemi ran up to Kosuzu, carrying the otter spirit with her. Kaze seemed to have passed out from fear, hanging as limp as a plushie over Yumemi’s shoulders. As soon as the scientist reached the group, she threw her arms around the kitsune, giving her a desperate hug. “Kosuzu… Kosuzuuuuuu…”
“Yumemi! Ow, ow, bruises, bruises.” Despite her body protesting, the kitsune squeezed her back, just as tightly. “Are you okay? Tsukasa didn’t hurt you?”
“I-I was just… I was so scared…” The girl was clearly still a wreck, Chen wrapping her tails around her for support. For a moment, the three girls just let tears of relief flow, battered and bruised, but still alive.
“What an attack!” There was the sound of rubble being knocked to the floor. Kosuzu spun around, dread filling her. The pegasus was sitting up, adjusting her hat. “So that’s the power of an IC, huh?”
Chen groaned. “I should have known that wouldn’t be enough…” She tried to step in front of the other two, as the pegasus sat up. “Saki… we won already. Just give it up!”
Kurokoma shook her head. As Kosuzu looked her over, the young kit’s heart sank - while she had a few scratches and cuts, she was clearly up for far more of a fight than Chen and Kosuzu combined. She strolled over, flexing her arms.
“Like I’m gonna give up now, kitty-cat. With power like that? I gotta have a proper fight against it myself!” She examined the trio, humming. “And if the pup’s not ready for another round, she can get some rest at Keiga HQ.”
Chen threw her good arm out, in front of the two girls. “You won’t pass, Saki. It’s over.” She started to move forward, but her legs gave out beneath her.
Kosuzu panicked, trying to prop up her sister without pushing on any of her injuries. “Ch-Chen, don’t! You can’t beat her like this!”
“Y-yeah, I know. That 11.3 was pretty optimistic, anyways.” Chen coughed, wiping a bit of blood from her lip. “Good thing I don’t have to, eh? Time’s up, Saki. We win.”
The doors to the station exploded, blue light filling the room. The kitsune turned her eyes to the source - and her heart stopped. A beast from her nightmares emerged, snarling and growling.
It was the same beast that had chased her and Tsukasa, all those nights ago. A near-formless being of rage, only vaguely resembling a kitsune. It leapt into the room, snarling, and charged for the pegasus.
Saki beamed. “Ooooh, so the mama fox finally showed up, eh? Perfect!” She got into a fighting stance. “Come on, Ran! Give me a legendary battle! Prove to me you’re worth the hype!” She kicked off the ground, rushing for the new opponent.
The two powerful youkai charged at each other, ready to strike. Kosuzu prepared to shield herself, expecting a titanic clash. But when the two neared, the nightmare creature’s form dissipated, into nothing more than mist.
In its place was a blonde fox woman with a look of utterly intense focus. Saki’s initial kick was aimed at the horrifying illusion, and swung wide of the kitsune herself. A series of precision strikes, too fast to see as anything more than a blur, shot into the matriarch’s body. The Keiga leader seized up, becoming locked in her kicking stance as she tumbled to the ground.
“Heedless of potential deception and traps, overcommitting to an aggressive melee attack against an unknown opponent, no countermeasure or warding spell for getting struck in pressure points…” The nine-tailed fox’s tone was nothing but raw condemnation and contempt. “And too foolish to realize her slowed reactions due to exhaustion. So much for the Keiga’s strongest warrior.”
She walked over, lifting the twitching pegasus by her leg. Kurokoma Saki managed a shrug. “H-hey, take it as a c-complement. Toutetsu talked a big game about your spellcasting, and your shikigami put up a hell of a fight even after I broke her arm. Couldn’t resist going right in when I saw ya, y’know?”
Yakumo Ran glared at her. “Yukari, give me strength… Kurokoma Saki… I will not give you what you deserve, for the sake of those three girls. I would not wish to make their terrible experiences today any worse. But let me make two things clear, for you and the Keiga.”
She pulled the arm holding the pegasus back, glaring up at the hole. “One: If you wish to fight me, you need but ask, and we can make the arrangements for a formal duel under fair conditions. Two: If you wish to live to see tomorrow, you will take these words to heart: NEVER TOUCH MY DAUGHTERS EVER AGAIN!”
She swung her whole body, throwing the paralyzed Saki through the hole, and out into the city’s skies. The kitsune watched her depart, glaring into the distance.
And then, she turned to the three girls. The moment she saw Kosuzu… she froze. She stared at the kit, stunned, trying to speak, but unable to vocalize anything.
Kosuzu… stepped forward, gently encouraged by Chen’s push. The fox in front of her seemed… picturesque, ethereal, almost unreal in her eyes.
She had been struggling to think of what to say in this moment even when everything was going to plan. And in the short time since it had all gone off the rails, she’d not just gotten herself into trouble, she’d gotten Chen badly hurt as well, and destroyed any preparations the Yakumo had made. Her head was a torrent of emotions, and… what she was supposed to say just didn’t seem to come to her. Still, she needed to talk about something, anything…
[ ] Herself.
[ ] Chen.
[ ] The Grimoire.
[X] The Grimoire.
I mean, what else is Kosuzu gonna default to.
[X] The Grimoire.
Agree with previous anon
[x] The Grimoire
I can already see how the scene goes in my mind’s eye.
[X] The Grimoire.
Yeah this sounds like the Kosuzu default. And the one she's least likely to start being negative about herself in at least the time it takes Ran to recover anyways.
>>212317
To expand on this, I can picture Kosuzu rambling about all the different things she’s learned from the book, how helpful what she’s learned has been, and all of that until Ran finally recovers enough to hug her.
>>212310
Youmu’s deadpan face is hilarious here.
[X] The Grimoire.
Man, isn't it super weird how the last three votes have only had one option? I jest, of course, but...
[X] Chen
Normally, Kosuzu/book would be obvious, but in this particular case, I feel like Chen should be more on her mind. Girl did just put her life on the line buying time for her, and she is starting to settle in to having her for a sister.
[X] Chen.
Just to have a little more challenge.
>>212310
Always great to have more art!
[ X ] Chen.
the grimoire is important, but it's also not going anywhere, while Chen's gotten fairly roughed up for our sake; time to see if she's doing okay.
>>212318 here
I'm changing my mind here, while B O O K is a Kosuzu default... I feel like the chance for Kosuzu to talk about her big sis is probably better. So:
[UNDO] The Grimoire
[X] Chen.
This is >>212320
[UNDO] The Grimoire.
[X] Chen.
[X] The Grimoire
This is the easiest choice for me, since Kosuzu is all about books. I think Chen can handle herself for now, but we'll see.
[X] Chen.
Get that girl medical attention!
Also, Kosuzu's spell card was incredible!
[X] The Grimoire
Chen would be my 2nd choice as all these options seems like they all could be talked about but by priority.
>>212337
Give her some attention, sure, but in 24h, she'll be just fine. She's a youkai after all. If she had been human, I would have agreed 100% with you.
I'm basing myself on canon where Satori got stabbed in the heart by Flandre in FDS (don't remember the exact chapter by heart). So, that's why Chen's arm will be just fine.
Feel free to disagree if Canon should still apply to an extent or not.
Both sides seem reasonable. Anyways...
[x] Herself.
>>212339
In 24 hours she'll probably be fine, but right now she's hurt and could use palliative care to make those 24 hours easier. Just because she could tough it out doesn't mean anyone should let her.
Counting to >>212340:
Main Choice:
[1] Herself.
[13] Chen.
[8] The Grimoire.
:3
[x] Chen
Shes hurt all over not thinking about her just seems wrong
[x] Chen
Chen deserves the love, she's felt so guilty for not being there for Ran when she was in trouble, and saw herself as a replacement for Kosuzu, she doesn't even think she's Ran's own daughter and just her Shikigami, I think it'll mean a lot to Chen if Kosuzu tells Ran how great of a big sister she's been
A simple sketch I made while waiting for Kosuzu's hits on Tsukasa. This series really got me in a chokehold and it took me out of my artblock lmao
>>212346
the sketch looks cool
[X] Chen
Big sis deserves some love right now, no?
>>212346
Always nice to see more art!
This series was my reason to start drawing again (and still is), so I can totally relate!
>>212346
this looks really amazing!
>Chen selected
>Kosuzu not caring about herself
>Grip set to 100
>???
(This is a joke)
Anyway, what da Seiga doing?
>>212352
Being imprisoned by Keiki/Yachie because she got knocked out by Yukari.
I wonder what will happen to Yoshika now that Seiga is going to be imprisoned or something...
[X] The Grimoire.
I think Kosuzu is a bit tunnel-visioned right now. Chen might be sitting right next to her, but all Kosuzu sees is Ran.
[1] Herself.
[17] Chen.
[10] The Grimoire.
“U-um…” Kosuzu stepped forward, awkwardly. For a long moment, she wasn’t sure of what to say. There were things she’d wanted to say, but were they too forward?
The kitsune seemed similarly stunned. The silence hung for far too long. W-was she not what Ran expected? W-was she too dirty or messy for such a powerful kitsune’s daughter? O-or was it all a big dumb case of mistaken identity, and Kosuzu really was just a gutter fox?
She needed something, anything to talk about… a safe, mutual topic bubbled to the surface, finally propelling her to speak first. “Um! M…Miss Ran! Do you like my hair? Chen did it for me. It’s really good, right?” She reached up, trying to feel for it… it seemed one of the sides had fallen loose. “U-um, I mean, it was.”
There was another moment of silence, before Kosuzu continued. “Ch-Chen’s been a big help these last two days. She helped me find a bunch of books when I wanted to study some stuff too - u-uh, not that the Grimoire hasn’t been helpful!” The little fox sighed. “I-I really got us into a lot of trouble, though…”
Chen stumbled over. “Kosuzu- you were trying to protect Yumemi. And you did it! You managed-”
“B-but you got hurt!” As the adrenaline started to leave her, guilt started to emerge again. “All because of my plan. I-I was stupid, and desperate, a-and I-”
Warmth.
Gentle, warm arms had wrapped around the two girls. The grip was tight, but managed to snake its way past every bruise and scrape, comforting without hurting in the slightest. Kosuzu blinked, confused and disoriented even as a sense of security washed over her. Ran was… she was hugging her?
“You beautiful girls…” Kosuzu felt her shoulder getting damp, as the older kitsune started to weep. “You beautiful, beautiful girls…” Even Ran’s scent was so familiar… Kosuzu’s cheeks were getting damp too. “You’re safe. Oh, thank goodness you’re safe…”
One word sprung to Kosuzu’s lips, and she tried desperately to fight it down. If she said it, and it was wrong, then she’d never recover from the mistake. She couldn’t say it. She had to stop herself, if she fooled herself, she-she couldn’t let it- couldn’t get caught in the- she- she- couldn’t stop-
“M-mommy?”
Yakumo Ran just gave a gentle nod into her shoulder, still holding her close.
“Mommy…” Every last restraint, every single measure of control Kosuzu had… in an instant, it felt like they had never existed. “M-mommy…” Even in her dream with Yukari, she’d managed to talk, to try and explain what she was feeling, but she couldn’t even manage that anymore. “Mommy… mommyyyyy…!” She bawled, repeating herself over and over.
Each cry came out with agonizing pain, wracked and wretched. It felt like going through everything all over again. All the years of misery and mistreatment, all the doubt and fear and guilt and shame. But even as the pain bubbled to the surface, it didn’t stay - it burned away, the years fading into nothingness, until she felt like she was three years old again.
And so, the little kit cried. Kosuzu cried until her eyes ached and stung, and until her throat felt dry and hoarse. She cried because she’d hurt herself, she cried because she’d hurt her sister. She cried because she was so tired she could fall asleep and because she feared she might yet wake up.
But most of all, she cried because she could. She cried because it was okay to cry, because no matter how much she did cry, her mother held her close and kept her warm and safe. She cried because her mother and sister cried with her.
She cried, and cried, and cried… because, at long last, it was all over.
Only a few more chapters to go until things close for this arc. Thank you all for staying with me.
He does it again, ladies and gentlemen…
Can we throw Tsukasa into the Sanzu just to make sure she doesn't ruin this
>She cried, and cried, and cried… because, at long last, it was all over...
... And then she woke up.
"Morning Ko-Ko!"
This is probably one of the shortest updates in all of Redo/Reimu, but I think I speak for everyone when I say that making it any longer would make it worse.
Bravo, good sir, and thank you. This is everything I wanted.
>>212359
with all due respect, take a long walk off a short pier over a deep harbor
And all that talk over getting Chen some attention was just to get Kosuzu to get started to talk to Ran. If I'd known, I wouldn't even argued about youkai healing in 24h and chosen Chen and it wouldn't had been a question. (or "herself" would've work too)
Now, I hope "Grip" is -5 - even though it was not mentionned.
>>212359
The door is over to your right. Please open it and leave.
Kosuzu is probably going to be getting those butterfly pills for a loooonnnnnggg while for dealing with nightmares involving exactly that scenario.
I second this, I'm getting phase 2 suwako boss fight flashbacks right now
>>212364
Suwako’s second phase was set up during the update Youmu reunited with Youki, and they didn’t have time to hug it out then. I think Tsukasa, if she wakes up soon enough to escape, will prioritize saving her own skin over any form of revenge.
>>212365
This is why I think we should drop her in the Sanzu then.
Hmmm...Seal (with Hakurei Seals) Tsukasa in a Bottle, finish off by melting the glass shut, then bury the bottle in a cushioned lockbox.
At the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Either that or just off her and send her to Shiki.
...I wonder if Reimu will mention a certain Crown Prince...
...Oh dear, the Captcha decided to weigh in. It said "YUUKA"
> because, at long last, it was all over.
It better be, Gooboi, it better be.
Now for our perfect run reward could we get a double, triple, quadruple check that Tsukasa is definitely dead and not coming back any time soon actually, ever. Make sure she’s not coming back, ever.
>She reached out into the gaps again. Slowly, they appeared around her, each one revealing different scenes. A different train station, with bisected haniwa crawling to support each other.
yay! it seem Bishop and the other Haniwha from the earlier part are... well alive!
>A group of rabbit spirits, completely unaware of her eyes upon them.
Well there's Tewi crew! I wonder what they were up to in all of this.
>A taotie, who saw the gap and stared at her with a slack jaw.
...yanno I am wondering how much was Yuuma keeping up with the situation at large. Just a bunch of rumors floating around, the Keiga do a suicide charge into the Haniwha Territory*... then all of a sudden a Gap opens and you see a 9 tails that looks REALLY close to an old buddy of yours suddenly looking at you...
>>212369
I sincerely hope that at least one of the remaining chapters or an epilogue is Yuuma showing up to see just what the heck is going on.
Bonus points if she hears about the whole Tsukasa debacle and decides that Tube Fox is on the menu.
>>212370
Hoping Yuuma shows up just for interactions with her and Ran.
Old gang friend leaves and then next time you see them, their a mother of two
> A sodden red-haired woman with a dripping scythe, examining a winged girl who was twitching on the ground.
komachi and... my first thought was youmu getting beat after trying to make her way to the animal realm to 'save' reimu from yachie, but on second thought that's probably kutaka after getting bulldozed by mama ran.
>>212370
i'm looking forward to kosuzu's epilogues the most out of all the arcs ngl
You know, I’m kind of hoping that one of the epilogues involves Megumu in some capacity. She’s the first person Kosuzu remembers being friendly to her in recent times, and it’d be interesting to see her reaction to everything.
In Keiki’s estate, the overwhelming mood was exhaustion. Stressed out spirits were dragging themselves back and forth, trying to patch up what they could. The haniwa bustling around were often missing arms, and many of them had crude, rudimentary prosthetics.
Kosuzu’s various wounds had been ultimately deemed minor for a youkai, with only the bites in her arm requiring any stitches. They still stung under their bandages, but her mother had spells to ease the pain into mere discomfort, even if it left her arm feeling numb. Unfortunately, this left her a lot of time to worry about Chen, who’d been put under for surgery.
She was sat with her mother, waiting for the surgery to complete. Ran had assured her that everything would be fine, but that didn’t stop either of them from worrying; in fact, the nine-tailed fox leapt up even quicker than her daughter when the operating room doors opened.
Yumemi staggered out, looking utterly spent. The human spirit who’d been acting as her doctor gently ushered her forwards, as Kosuzu ran to check on her. “Yumemi! Are you okay?”
The little girl gave a small, weak nod. The doctor gave her a pat on the shoulder. “You’ve all had very stressful days. Little Yumemi here’s physically fine, but she’s more than a little shaken.”
Kosuzu pulled the other girl into a hug. Yumemi hugged her back, still sniffling. “I-I’ll be okay. I promise.”
“Reimu, I told you, you don’t need to push me around!” The sound of a protesting voice across the floor caught both of the girl’s attention. The girls turned to look down the hall, as Reimu rushed up, carrying Mayumi on a hand trolley.
“Come on, Mayumi, you’re still getting used to that thing, alright?” The jidiao pulled the cart to a stop, helping the haniwa up to her feet. Kosuzu gasped - one of Mayumi’s arms was missing, and one of her legs had been replaced by a clay pegleg. With whole parts of Mayumi missing, it took Kosuzu a few seconds to even spot the handful of bandages the young miko was sporting. “Kosuzu, Yumemi! Are you two okay?”
“U-uh, we’ll be fine…” The two newcomers hobbled up as Kosuzu looked them over. “We’re waiting to hear about Chen, though. What happened with Mayumi?”
Reimu looked away. “My stupid scouting trip got us overrun. We’re lucky we made it out as intact as we did.”
Mayumi also didn’t meet their gazes. “When Keiki and Yukari came to rescue us, I had to get pulled back while Reimu went on ahead. At least they managed to beat the hermit.”
There was clearly an air of guilt around the two. Kosuzu wasn’t sure how to broach it, but before she could start to ask, Reimu changed the subject. “But hey, on the other side of things, the story we’ve heard is that the hero of the hour is one Yakumo Kosuzu.” She gave a small grin. “Good work, there.”
Kosuzu blushed. “U-uh, well… I guess things worked out okay. Mom got there just in time, in the end.”
Ran knelt down, giving Kosuzu a pat on the head. “And thank goodness for that. If you had been kidnapped when I was only minutes away… I don’t know what I would have done with myself.”
The small kitsune turned to her mother. “Um… I’m sorry for making you worry-”
“You were very brave, rushing out like that.” Her mother pulled her in for a hug. “And you did it to save a friend, as well. While I won’t deny you had me worried… you proved you could back it up, and you saved her in the end. I couldn’t be prouder.”
“Agreed.” The doors opened once more, and the group turned to face them. The sage of the gap stepped out, observing the group with a smile. “Kosuzu’s performance was simply exceptional - she even managed to defeat her once-kidnapper. We might finally get answers to the mystery that plagued us for seven years.”
The nine-tailed fox leapt up. “Lady Yukari! Is Chen-?”
“At ease, Ran. You think I’d be blathering about Tsukasa if I wasn’t confident in her recovery?” Yukari put her hand on Ran’s shoulder. “Surgery’s done, she’s just sleeping off the anesthetic now. Her arm’s gonna take a couple of weeks, but it’ll be good as new when it’s done.”
She was followed by an exhausted jidiao, slumped over with her tail dragging along the floor. “Which means that all of the kids are going to be okay. Ohhhhhhh… thank the Yama.” Yachie’s back collapsed against the wall, drawing long gouges in it as she slid down into a seating position.
Reimu ran up, rather alarmed. “Mama, are you okay?!”
The matriarch pulled her daughter into a hug. Reimu blinked, starting to blush as Yukari explained. “Well, you can imagine my shock when I discovered Kosuzu and Yumemi had gone missing… right when I was escorting you back to safety, young Reimu. Me and your mother had a rather lively conversation as I brought you home.”
Yachie groaned. “We were stretched too thin today, there was going to be something that slipped through. But we were so close to complete disaster… and even if you hadn’t run off, if Yumemi had been lost, Keiki would’ve…”
Yukari stepped closer, petting the little fox. “But considering the circumstances, the counterattack was a complete success. We have the haniwa factory and the library, and all of the kids are safe. Not to mention, we seized the wicked hermit behind their magic. There are still a lot of wolves with the haniwa-piercing power, but they’ll be playing cautiously with them until they can get Seiga back.”
“Mmm. And they’ll have to work to regain the territory the eagles and rabbits capitalized on and took. The wolves don’t have the numbers to attack into otter-boosted defenses, and even the damaged haniwa are still immune to anyone else.” Yachie’s voice was muffled as she held her daughter close - despite the increasingly annoyed slaps of Reimu’s tail on the ground. “We have the time to regather, at least…”
Ran stood up, holding her daughter’s hand. “If there’s anything we can do to help, just say the word, Yachie-”
“Just… ask someone else.” Yachie’s tiredness didn’t seem to translate to a loose grip, judging by Reimu’s struggling. “Ask Keiki, wherever she is.”
“She’s still out replacing pieces.” Mayumi gestured to her pegleg. “She’s just getting everyone she can up and about - she’ll give us all better parts later.”
The sound of sobbing started to fill the room. The girls looked around for a moment, trying to spot the source.
In the center of the crowd, Yumemi was starting to weep. Kosuzu stepped away from her mother, reaching out to Yumemi. “What’s wrong?” The little girl didn’t respond, tearing up and shaking her head.
“She wants to go home.”
A familiar voice sounded from behind her, causing Kosuzu to turn around. Ichi was standing at a different doorway, fully robed up. “She’s had two very long, very rough days, and she got kidnapped on both of them. She’s sore, and tired, and very, very scared, but the PSV’s missing parts that might take weeks, if not months, to build from scratch here, and the thought of being here that long terrifies her. She’s even wondering if she’s actually a spirit and she can’t ever go back.”
The red-headed woman stepped up, kneeling in front of the young girl. “Part of her wants to be brave, she wants to help fight like everyone else did. But she’s still just a kid, a human kid, and with everyone else’s moms here… she can’t hide it any more.”
The young Yumemi’s tears were streaming down her face. “I-I, I can’t just-”
“Leave everyone here? I know, kid. There’s still more to do, you know that.” The robed figure lifted her hand, reaching up to her mask. “But there is another option, isn’t there?”
Ichi pulled off her mask… revealing a face nearly identical to Yumemi’s. The little girl gasped, as her older self smiled at her. “You can come back later, Yumemi. Take a few years to train, to prepare. Make a few blasters, and become a real crack shot with ‘em.” Ichi grinned. “It’s part of the fun of being a time traveler, after all.”
Yumemi nodded, slowly, as Ichi wiped a tear off her cheek. “And if you can come back and fix things up later… it’s fine to ask for what you really want right now. Got it?”
The young girl’s lip was trembling. “I want… to go home,” she started. “I-I want to see mommy and daddy! I want to see Ruukoto! I-I want, I want, I-I wanna go home…!” She started bawling, as Ichi pulled her into a hug.
“Yeah, I know, kid.” Ichi lifted her up, as the girl bawled. “Don’t worry, we’ll get you home. I brought the parts you need. Just need some assistance getting everything installed.”
“I think we can help with that.” Yukari stepped forward, giving her a smile. “After all, we do owe you a favor or two, Ichi. And I know just who can help you best.”
She looked back at Ran and her daughter, giving a small smile. “Hey, Kosuzu? …Wanna see your mother do something cool?”
Three more chapters until the end of K/K. wew lad has this been a long one!
I've posted the second half of Y/Y's last epilogue, as well. There may be a small detail about Village Marisa that's not come up yet in it (alongside Aunn being a very good pupper): >>/shorts/3019
And we've also had a new omake drop! A little introspective piece by Lord Hylia. Once again, I've given this a character check like the plushie omakes: >>/shorts/3017
D’aww. Glad Tsukasa and Seiga are under lock and key. I feel Yukari is going to be especially inventive with Tsukasa’s interrogation. But, honestly, who cares?
Looking forwards to what happens next
I can't wait to cause chaos as Marisa

Give it some time. Tsukasa hasn’t been subjected to Ran and Yukari’s tender mercies yet.
Finally caught up to the front and, great story Gooboi! Just also had a thought about my favorite character from the fighting games: Sumireko. Since it wasn’t her actual body in Gensokyo, but instead her dream world self, when the last timeline fell apart would she have burned like the humans, or simply vanished like the yokai? Would the her on the outside wake up in a cold sweat from a nightmare she can’t remember, or be comatose? Just thoughts because the story has been extremely interesting so far!
Reimu acting like an overcuddled neko miko with the tail slaps is hilariously cute. and Poor Yumemi, just overwhelmed by everything. and She made Ruukoto a bit back!
as for Tsukasa: a lot of the option are attempt to seal her and then place her somewhere unobserved, which might open up the possibility of her escape despite how deadly they sound... I personally would banish her from Gensokyo, and just be observed as the fading of Magic means that she slowly fades away herself until she is less than even forgotten.
Kosuzu had to admit Yukari wasn’t wrong; seeing her mother at work was cool.
Everyone was out on the back lawn of Keiki’s estate - even the sculptor goddess herself had come out, albeit still working on assembling parts for the haniwa who were watching the spectacle. The Probability Space Vessel was in the very center, with a series of incomprehensible parts around it. Ichi and Ran were working on it, the latter almost a blur with how quickly she was putting it together.
Ichi herself was only guiding Ran, pointing to specific parts and answering technical questions. Apparently the Ichi they were seeing was only a projection; the real one was “busy elsewhere”, presumably in the hospital wing (but the young Yumemi didn’t need to hear that).
The four girls were on a bench together, watching the spectacle. Yukari had managed to produce some popsicles, which had been devoured with gusto. An idle part of Kosuzu’s mind wondered if her gaps could be refrigerated.
“So you knew future-me was here, all this time?” Yumemi’s face was still tear-streaked, but having a hug, a way out and a popsicle had done wonders for her mood. One of Reimu’s white scales adorned her neck, a gift for her departure. “And you didn’t tell me?”
Mayumi took a moment to consider. “Well, we figured you’d find out eventually.” The four girls shared a laugh.
Reimu took her last bite, looking out at the ongoing progress. “...Ran’s really quick with that, huh? That's shikigami for you.”
“Yeah, shouldn’t be long now until everything’s done.” Yumemi watched her work for a moment, before sighing. “...And I’ll be going home.”
She stood up, turning to the girls. “Mayumi, Reimu, Kosuzu…” She bowed. “I can’t thank you enough. You all helped me so much…”
Reimu saluted. “It’s what we do, Yumemi.” She grinned. “Besides, you’re gonna pay us back in the future, right?”
Mayumi nodded, giving her own bow. “Saving humans is what I was made for. I’m glad I was able to serve my job to perfection.”
The jidiao gave a snarky grin. “Says the girl that wanted to bomb the place.”
“Like your plan was any better!” The two Animal Realm natives got into a playful argument, as Yumemi turned to Kosuzu.
“Kosuzu… umm. Can you do… the thing again?” Kosuzu blinked, before catching on to what she meant and shifting to fox form. The young girl picked her up, holding her close.
“You’re really soft and fluffy, Kosuzu. …I’m gonna miss you.” Yumemi started to tear up again. “When Tsukasa kidnapped me, I thought I would… I thought I’d never get home. Thank you… thank you so much for coming for me.”
Kosuzu shook her head. “After realizing how much Tsukasa had ruined my life, I wasn’t about to let her take one of my friends too.”
She leant into the girl’s chest. “Besides, I told you, right? Even before I knew I wasn’t a tube-fox, you were proof that I didn’t have to be. Proof I could help someone. I wasn’t about to let you get kidnapped again if I could help it.”
The other girl sniffled, hugging Kosuzu more tightly. “I-I’ll come back! I’ll make sure to help you get away from Tsukasa! I-I’ll do anything I can to help!”
The fox smiled. “I know, Yumemi. And thank you.” She snuggled into the hug, enjoying the quiet moment. After a few moments, the jidiao and the haniwa joined in, hugging Yumemi close.
After what felt like far too little time, they heard the whir of engines, and a series of electronic noises. The group turned to see the Probability Space Vessel roaring to life.
Ran wiped a bit of sweat off her brow. “We’ve got it going, Yumemi. It’s time to go home.”
Yumemi gulped, setting Kosuzu on the ground. With a few hesitant steps, she walked over to the machine. “This… will get me home?”
Ichi smiled. “Yep. Specifically, we’ve set it so the same time passed for you as did for everyone else. Mom and dad will be all over you, and you’re gonna get the biggest cup of cocoa you’ve ever seen.”
Yumemi looked up at her other self. “Reimu, Kosuzu, Mayumi… You’ll help them, right?”
“I’ll do what I can. And I’ve got some really fun ideas as well.” The soothsayer gave a wink. “But you’re gonna have to find out about them the long way.”
She nodded, stepping up to the door of the vehicle. “Then… I guess I’m going, everyone.” She wiped off tears with one of her sleeves. “Reimu, Mayumi… Kosuzu… I’m going to miss you.”
Reimu gave a small smile. “You’ll be back. We know you will be.”
Mayumi saluted. “It’s been an honor, Yumemi. Until we meet again.”
Kosuzu returned to human form, looking up at her friend. “...We’ll miss you too, Yumemi. Please, stay safe, alright?”
The time traveler nodded. “Yeah, I will.” Through her tears, she managed a smile. “I’ll be back, and I’ll help you all save the world. Whatever it takes!”
She stepped into her vehicle, starting it up. With a roar, the PSV lifted off from the ground.
The crowd cheered as Yumemi took off, into the distance. The girls waved as she streaked into the sky, faster and faster. One last, beautiful flash of light, and then… she was gone.
The elder Yumemi looked up from her hospital bed, as the three girls rushed into the room. There were two beds in the room, for the only living patients - Chen was still out cold.
“Why, hello girls.” She gave a cheeky grin. “Long time no-oof!”
Kosuzu wrapped her arms around the time traveler. “I told you to stay safe! I-I didn’t want you to get stabbed for me!”
Yumemi chuckled, petting the fox girl’s ears. “Well, after all the trouble you got into for my sake, I had to do the same, didn’t I? …Don’t worry, Kosuzu. ‘S just a flesh wooooah-ah-ow!”
Reimu poked Yumemi’s injury one final time, glaring at the time traveler. “We didn’t even want to tell Kosuzu, because she’d have flipped if we didn’t know you were gonna be okay. Do you think her friend getting stabbed for her was going to go over well?”
Yumemi winced. “Oww… fair point…” She gave them a weak smile. “Sorry for worrying you, girls. I just didn’t want to let Tsukasa get away with that book, y’know?”
Kosuzu sighed, leaning against the woman in the bed. “Tsukasa was the one who told me, y’know. She made me think you were…” She looked down. “I was so worried… th-that even if we saved you there…”
Yumemi sighed, running her fingers through Kosuzu’s hair. “...Sorry. But you in particular saved me twice - I had to do my part, y’know.” She looked up at Mayumi. “Thank you again, Mayumi. You saved my life back there. …Do you want some cool future tech for a new arm?”
Mayumi shook her head. “Lady Keiki will make new parts for me, I’m sure. As for thanking me… just come up with better plans than that one from now on, alright? What you did was just reckless.”
Yumemi laughed, before wincing and clutching her side. “A-alright, it’s a promise. No more getting in knife fights with kidnappers over books. As for making better plans… I do have one in mind.”
The girls looked up at her, the time-traveler smirking. “I’ve been thinking about… everything. All that you are doing, changing yourselves to stop a disaster. You’ve suffered a lot for it, haven’t you? But there’s a lot of unique things good about this timeline, too.”
Yumemi leant back. “I’ve… got a plan brewing. And if it works, it should turn things on its head. But I’ve not got all the details locked down yet, and I don’t want to make any promises to you girls until I’m sure it’s gonna work. But suffice it to say… you’ve been a big help in getting it going already.”
Reimu straightened up, looking at her. “...As long as it doesn’t get you hurt again… we’ve helped?”
“Mmmm. Just by being the little heroes you are.” Yumemi smirked. “But if it’s gonna work, we need a few more special pieces. Some more recruits to join our cause.”
Kosuzu nodded. “We’ll try to find them, then. Anyone in particular you need?”
Yumemi started counting them off with her fingers. “We’ll need to bring back Lady Kamishirasawa, though I’m sure you already wanted to find her. And we need the best magicians you can find, living… or dead, I suppose.”
She paused, then seemed to realize something. “Oh, and of course, we’ll need a real fortune teller. And a good one, at that.” She turned to the trio. “Any of you girls got any ideas?”
Reimu and Kosuzu shared a long, slow glance. “You… could say that.” The jidiao offered, with a guarded tone.
The kitsune nodded in cautious agreement. “Um… yeah, we know someone. A human from the village. You just… get some sleep, alright?”
Yumemi smiled. “I’ll look forward to meeting them. Hopefully they don’t mind the whole becoming youkai thing.” She closed her eyes, her breathing starting to slow.
The Immaterial Children exchanged looks again. Reimu let off a nervous chuckle. “If we’re both thinking of the same guy… I doubt that’ll be a problem.”
Kosuzu nodded, before leaning into the time traveler’s chest. “...Have a nice rest, Yumemi,” she whispered. “You’ve earned it.”
And one more choice... or is there? :3c
Gonna try and finish things with this thread, at this point.

You're just in time for the marisa vote! Specifically, we're about 3 updates away now.
Sumi isn't someone i seriously considered much (except as a candidate for the same role Tenshi/Snae have.)
The black flames come from and inflict despair... i think it would have spread to outside world sumi, but probably petered out before it went on a rampage. If, that is, that was all that happened in the outside world...
With that said, if you like Sumireko, make sure to check out Urban Legend in Limbo, also on the TH board!
See you again, Yumemi.
Of course Kosuzu and Reimu both jump to the Fortune Teller when asked about finding a fortune teller.
>She paused, then seemed to realize something. “Oh, and of course, we’ll need a real fortune teller. And a good one, at that.” She turned to the trio. “Any of you girls got any ideas?”
>]Reimu and Kosuzu shared a long, slow glance. “You… could say that.” The jidiao offered, with a guarded tone.
"Oh yeah, I still need to kill him in this timeline :D"
"You do me this favor... and maybe... just maybe I won't burn you from the inside out when you try to become a youkai."
> Marisa wakes up for first time
> First vote is to go to the SDM
About older Yumemi's (aka Ichi) plan, I hope it's defeating the Pyres only. Because, outside of Reimu (solely for her job), I (personally) wouldn't want any of them to return to being a human. Maybe I'm mixing up a plan with another character in a previous character arc. My personal mains reason is that, for most of them, it was like some kind of dream to them. They knew it was a line they shouldn't cross for Gensokyo's stability and leaving their humanity behind is also quite taboo as well.
Akyuu: she has probably the most to benefit to stay youkai. It lengths her life so much. The downside is that (probably), the yama will refuse to a 10th rebirth.
Youmu: probably the one with the least reasons to stay youkai besides Reimu. She had already the advantage of staying in a pure land with Yuyuko and already only being half-human to begin with. She was over 60 years old already even though she looks like a teenager. So, staying a Hell Raven, outside of breaking Okuu's heart (and maybe the rest of Chireiden), it's a hard justify. However, I'd see her stay a Hell Raven because, well, to be honnest, only Gooboi could find a reason why.
Kosuzu: The other one with the most to gain to stay a youkai. She loved youma books and being a youkai already, not only allows her to recollect them without any repercussion but also create them. If memory serves, at the end of FS, she actually wanted to learn from Reimu or Marisa (don't remember which - might be both). So, remaining a kitsune will allow her to basically live her dream and actually be part of the heroes. Also, Ran could probably become heart broken to lose her kit only after 60-80 years when she, herself, has lived over 900.
Reimu: In my opinion, the only reason why she'd prefer to stay a jidiao is only the potential lifespan and stability it could bring Gensokyo as a whole. Otherwise, it could be seen as "why are you taking the humans' side while you're a youkai yourself?!"
Marisa: We don't know yet what she'll be (although that'd be pretty soon) but, assuming it's something that'd allow her to be strong (like an oni) or legally become what she wanted to be (ie. a full fledged magician like Alice and Patchouli). I think she'd rather stay a youkai than becoming human again. Anyway, that remains to be seen.
Sanae and Tenshi: We know they are going to be involved as they are the Paradox. Tenshi is obviously not included in what I am talking about here. I wouldn't see Sanae accepting to stay a youkai - if she becomes one that is (probably). Tenshi, I think she'd just prefer to gtfo Heaven for good if given the opportunity.
Of course... that's what I personally wish to happen. It will probably not reflect anybody else's point of view.
Oooh if you want some reason why Youmu might wanna stay a youkai, her and Utsuho share the same genes(so like a part of Myon is inside Okuu) if Youmu becomes human again what will become of Okuu? Will she keep the genes or will a big part of her be missing, cuz the Okuu we know is very much entangled with Myon, so if Youmu chooses to become human again she should probably be aware of the unknown consequences to her own twin sister. Otherwise I don't think Chireiden will mind too much if Youmu becomes a human again cause Youmu will always be Youmu to them, not to mention she can just visit between Former Hell and Hakugyokurou
In fairness, as far as we have been told Ichi's plan does leave the new lives of the Immaterial Children intact. Whether this manifests as them actually remaining intact or their being 2 copies of the same souls running around isn't 100% clear, but it depends on whether or not San/Ichi are working together or not (San is instead promising that the Immaterial Children will return to their old lives, so either San/Ichi are temporary allies and have split about the aftermath, or they are collaborating and are trying to end up with everyone happy.)
To fill in Sanae and Tenshi, I would say Sanae is the only one of the two that may be willing to stay a Youkai (contingent on her being able to maintain her relationship with Moriya Shrine, I wouldn't expect she would have too many objections.
Tenshi, given the context we have, is apparently a completely mess as a Youkai and would jump at the opportunity to be Human the most of the group... assuming having more of her friends around wouldn't be enough to stabilize her mentally.
Oops, you are right. Too much Sanae messing with me obviously (but must stick with the plan to deal with Marisa shenanigans).
Ichi/Go's exact relationship and plans are currently unknown, just that they are saying opposite outcomes for the IC. Assuming Kosuzu's arc gave us the reason for Yumemi's investment in keeping the IC immaterial, we likely will have to see Chiyuri to see why Go is trying to restore them.
I've been running on the belief that the ichi-go plan was to split the previous life and new life of each of the ICs out, not only do we have what ichi and go have been saying, but who has been saved or mentioned so far
- Youki, who is coming close to being able to cut anything, including concepts.
- Koishi without closing her eye, so someone that can read both the conscious, and the unconscious thoughts of people,
- then we have the plan for as many of the power magicians of Gensokyo
so yeah, even at the end of arc 1 I was thinking that was the plan.
Not gonna lie, spitting the IC sounds really convenient in a storytelling perspective, but also I don't know if that's the best opinion since some of them are really ingrained into their youkai forms, like as much as the Hieda side of Akyuu wants her to become human, clearly she herself wants to stay a youkai, and youkai Akyuu and human Akyuu feel basically like the same person
Kosuzu yawned. Her tail drooped low on the ground as she stumbled in the direction of her room.
Was it really only 7 pm? It felt like she’d been up for days. Re/Awakening really left her completely spent - she’d been running on nervous energy more than anything these today. In the end, she’d been at serious risk of falling asleep right in her dinner, and had shuffled off to bed in her pajamas not long after.
“Is Suzu getting tired?”
The kitsune’s attention turned in the direction of the voice. “Lady Yukari…?”
The sage smiled. “I hope you don’t mind, Kosuzu, but considering everything that’s happened, we’d like you to sleep somewhere else tonight. Somewhere you won’t slip out from under us.”
…The thought hadn’t occurred to Kosuzu before then, but now it was hard to ignore. “I-if you say so…”
Yukari nodded, taking the little fox’s hand. “Once you learn a few more safety spells and the like, we’ll let you have your space, of course. But for now, we want to keep you safe, Kosuzu.”
The sage reached out, touching Kosuzu’s forehead. At once, the young kitsune was wide awake. “And before you go to bed… we need to discuss a few matters.”
The kitsune blinked, standing up. “Woah… I-I’ll be able to go to sleep, right?”
Yukari gave a curt nod to that. “Of course. But this will be an important discussion, and I need you to listen to everything carefully. And a few minutes forcefully awake should have no lasting effects on you.”
Kosuzu followed Yukari, having to walk at twice the sage's pace to match her steps. “What’s happening with Tsukasa?”
Yukari waved her hand. “She has currently been placed in a gap for safekeeping. Me and Ran will decide her punishment later. …We’re going to make sure she’s not a threat to you ever again.”
“She turned white…” Kosuzu murmured. “W-was that a boundary?”
“...It appears she was once a kitsune,” Yukari explained hesitantly, “and has… at least for now, returned to being as such. Your power inadvertently flipped the border between her past and present self.”
“Flipping the border…” So it was a power like Yukari’s, then. Kosuzu thought back to the fight, trying to remember why that happened.
The story of Kudamaki ends here and now… it had been a statement meant to scare her false mother, but Kudamaki was self-evidently the name of a kuda-gitsune. Kosuzu’s power must have tapped into that boundary, on an unconscious level. “So she was… like me? A kitsune that became a tube fox?”
Yukari scowled. “Only in the intended outcome - her fall was her mistake, and rather than reflect on that, she tried to drag you down to her level. We suspect part of her motivation was simple jealousy - a fallen fox, envying one born into the power she once had.”
She opened a gap, revealing a bird’s-eye view of Youkai Mountain. “For now, we’ve got one of my shikigami going to the place you described as your residence. We’re looking for more information on her past and connections, and the spells she used - particularly how she found out about you in the first place.”
“You mean the Hollow Psyche spell? The one that binds a spirit to you?” Kosuzu mused on it, debating whether to commit to the question… before deciding to jump in. “Um, speaking of that. When you were about to leave to rescue Reimu… was that what you meant by little spirits?”
Yukari… paused, if only for a second, to look Kosuzu up and down. The kitsune quickly explained. “Um, I know you said you meant the otters, but me and Chen were talking about it earlier, and we thought you might have meant something else. Like Hollow Psyches, or something like that?”
The sage apparently found nothing in her assessment, causing her to hum. “...You’re not wrong. I wasn’t thinking of any of the gangs around here.”
Yukari sighed, opening up a gap of her own. The pair stepped inside, into a purple void. “Tell me, Kosuzu. Why did you believe Yumemi was in danger this morning?”
Kosuzu blinked. “I-I don’t know. It was just a hunch, I thought…”
“You didn’t overhear anything through a gap, or see any evidence of it? And yet, you were so certain you broke away from Chen - and were ultimately correct?” Kosuzu nodded with each statement, bringing a small smile to Yukari’s lips. “Then… while I can’t say anything definitively, it may have been the spirits guiding you.”
Kosuzu’s eyes widened. “So they knew what was happening to Yumemi, and tried to tell me to protect her?”
“I can’t say anything for certain about that time. I wasn’t there, after all. But I do believe there are… something like Hollow Psyches moving with you. Spirits almost too small to be detected by any means.” Yukari looked away. “Beings stripped of all traces of identity… They may not even have a concept of their own existence.”
Kosuzu’s voice was hushed. “...But you can see them?”
“I can only sense the boundaries those frail souls touch when they reach out and establish a connection with you. They are so miniscule, and their whispers so faint that I’m surprised I can even do that.” Yukari turned back, her smile once again returned to her face. “But every time I’ve seen them do it… they tried to help you, Kosuzu. Of that I am certain.”
She looked up. “I’ve seen them affect Reimu, too. Perhaps the souls of Immaterial Children are sensitive to them… or perhaps they merely focus on you for some other reason. Regardless of the cause, Kosuzu, they want to help you. Protect you and your friends.”
It was rather a lot to take. Kosuzu rubbed her head, trying to process it all. “It’s strange… but if you think they helped me save Yumemi… I’ll trust them too.” The sage gave her another pat on her head. “...Do you think I’ll see them, if I get better with the boundary powers?"
The sage took a deep breath. “It’s not just boundaries - you’ve been creating gaps, haven’t you?”
Kosuzu nodded. “Yeah. At first I thought that maybe they were some safety measure from you… but they’re not, right?”
“No, they’re not. I suspect they are an ability innate to this life, Kosuzu - an ability ingrained in your very being.” Yukari looked up. “This is… an incredible power. But at the same time, it’s a very dangerous one, as well.”
She took a few moments to choose her words. “Have Chen or Ran told you… about the Restrictions?”
“Um… Chen mentioned a little bit. About… Tsugaru.” There was just a hint of sadness in the sage’s eyes. “...Do you think I’ll need some Restrictions, too?”
The gap youkai nodded, putting her hand on the girl’s shoulder. “The risks are simply too great. If you were under too much stress, and your power surged forth unrestrained… it could be disastrous. For now, it’s probably for the best to train without relying on that power.”
Kosuzu’s ears sagged, but Yukari gave her a small smile. “But that doesn’t mean they’ll be locked away forever.” The smile morphed into a conspiratorial grin. “Frankly, the thought of being able to teach my power to someone else has me thrilled.”
The kitsune’s tail started to wag again at that thought. Even if she couldn’t keep that power for now, everyone knew how powerful Yukari was. If that was even with these Restrictions in place… “When do we start?”
“Just focus on learning from your mother, for now.” Yukari gave the fox’s ears a rub. “After all, I need more than a little time to plan out how to teach you, while Ran’s been preparing since before you were born. You’ll be kept quite busy with her curriculum, I assure you.”
Kosuzu nodded, giving Yukari a grin. Then… a thought struck her. “Yukari? Do you know why I have abilities like yours?”
Yukari shrugged. “I have some ideas, but… I don’t want to say anything that might turn out to be incorrect and confuse you. And unfortunately, we’ve got many mysteries to investigate for now, so I don’t know when I can get back to it.” The sage turned back to the path ahead. “The fact is that you do have them, and they are innate to you. On that there is no doubt.”
Kosuzu’s experience as a tube-fox told her that Yukari probably knew why, but she wasn’t ready to tell. It was annoying, but Kosuzu could wait on that front.
Yukari’s smile fell, opening up a gap in front of them. “Now, Kosuzu… with all the questions you’ve asked us, there’s one we need to ask you. And it’s a very important one.”
A figure stepped through the gap. Kosuzu’s tail started to slow, sensing the change in the mood.
“Kosuzu?” Yakumo Ran gave her a small, sad smile. “We need to have a talk. And I’m sorry to say it can’t wait.”
She knelt before her daughter. “Kosuzu… I want you to listen very carefully to what I’m about to say, alright?” As the young fox nodded, she paused for a moment to choose her words. “I… I let you down. We all did. It’s why you’ve been suffering for all these years… I honestly wouldn’t blame you if you hated us for it.”
The nine-tailed fox ran her hands through Kosuzu’s hair. “Being a member of the Yakumo family is dangerous. Being the youngest member even more so. You… won’t have it easy, Kosuzu. And we’ve already failed to protect you from the worst once.”
Yukari knelt down next to her. “But… for you and you alone, there is another option. Another path you can take, that’d keep you away from the target on the Yakumo family’s back. You could return to the Motoori household, once more, and be known only as their wayward daughter.”
Kosuzu blinked. “You mean… claim I’m not part of the Yakumo family?”
Ran couldn’t meet her gaze. “Kosuzu, please don’t misunderstand. After looking for you for seven years, the thought of giving you up to another family, of pretending you’re not my daughter, even if just in an official sense -” She took a moment to regather herself. “I can’t bear it. But if it will keep you safe, if it will keep you happy… then I’m prepared to do it.”
Yukari nodded. “I assure you, Kosuzu, if you were to return to the Motoori they would love you just as much as Ran does. But… this needs to be a choice you make yourself.”
Kosuzu looked between the two of them, feeling her heart start to pound. “C-can’t we talk about this… later?”
Yukari shook her head. “There will be attention on you from the moment you officially return to Gensokyo, and depending on your choice, we need to plan accordingly. Teach you different things, to make sure you’re prepared for whatever your new life will be.”
Ran hugged her daughter. “I’m… sorry, Kosuzu. Putting such a heavy choice on you isn’t fair. But choosing for you would be even more unfair.”
Kosuzu gulped. Her thoughts were swirling in her head.
She could follow their logic. It made sense - keeping her at a distance would keep her safe from any of the Yakumo’s enemies. And… even if she wanted to be with them, being added to the Yakumo family had caused a lot of grief - not just for her, but for everyone else in it.
But… after years and years of pain, she wanted to be with her mother so badly. She wanted the comfort she’d had when her mother hugged her for the first time. She wanted to leave the pain behind, and to keep the new warmth with her.
Was it better to go back to being with her old family… or to stay a part of her new one?
[ } Stay with the Yakumo family.
{ ) Go back to the Motoori family.
Little Hollows…
I appreciate all you’ve done, guiding Kosuzu through this trying time.
But… don’t you think she should make this decision herself?
>But… don’t you think she should make this decision herself?
No
[X] Stay with the Yakumo family.
[X] Stay with the Yakumo family.
I think that, if Kosuzu was asked to choose, she would choose to stay with the Yakumos, simply because her memories of the Motoori family, while pleasant, are not quite the constant stream of affection that the Yakumos have shown her.
Also, being a Motoori would probably involve more subterfuge training and less combat training, and I think Kosuzu is more inclined to want Combat training now that she's capable of standing side by side with Reimu.
That said, I can understand why she might go back to her old family. They're her parents, and she probably misses them a lot. I personally think she would end up regretting that decision because of how much she would be smothered by her parents, but at the same time, they're her parents.
It's a messy situation that will leave Kosuzu feeling terrible no matter what happens, which is why I have a few thinks I want to suggest:
-{X} Ask Grandfather for advice on what to do.
-{X} Ask what the difference in training would be.
-{X} Ask if she would be able to visit the family she doesn't choose.
Damn Yukari really told us this was a family decision, go ahead Kosuzu, you choose
…you know what, Yukari. You’re right. She should make this choice herself. But at least allow me give her one piece of advice.
Don’t feel tied down by a desire to be safe from this danger. You’re likely gonna be in the thick of this no matter what Kosuzu, and if you go back to your old family just to try and stay away from it, you’ll ultimately just be the person your false mother was trying to make you.
At the same time, the inverse is true. Don’t go to the Yakumo’s simply to be in the thick of the action, for that mentality will foster reckless decisions that will ultimately come back to bite you.
I guess what I’m trying to say in all my rambling is, if you are going to make this decision, make it your decision. Chase after what your heart truly desires, and don’t tie yourself to the desires of others.
Yukari has blocked the vote. This time, you can't influence her decision.
Welcome to Redo/Reimu, where in the second-last chapter of Arc 4, I finally introduce the playable characters!
If you go back over Yukari's previous funny looks, you'll find that they all occur at specific moments - immediately after a vote, in fact.
Kosuzu's decision will be made as the last update to Kaizou/Kosuzu, and then... Marisa's arc will finally begin. The next chapter will be the last update to this thread, so please wait warmly while I get them both set up.
With that said... what an arc. This one arc is, as of this moment, THREE TIMES longer than Redo/Reimu and all of it's epilogues combined. It's been an absolute slog to get through, but the last few chapters... paying off everything I've steadily built for months has been an absolute blast.
We got Marisa's arc next, and then the final Arc of what I'm calling the Re/Awakening. It'll feature a certain scaly shrine maiden finally making her way to Gensokyo, along with the other four Immaterial Children all finally coming together again. Who else comes to visit, well... that remains to be seen.
Yanno, combined with Aunn's comments about Marisa having a Village choice over in epilogues... why do I get the feeling that the Youki of the village arc will be the fortune teller? ...And considering how it went with her daughter in canon, will that mean that Marisa might need to save him from HARU?
>:(
[A] Akyuu: Go eat lunch and be cooler than some responsible sage.
If we're not wanted here, we'll just take our services elsewhere and wait for you to come back begging for our services (of bossing around the ICs while they do all the actual work).
...in all seriousness, though, fascinating seeing the diagetic representation of anon! Clearly, we're the actual source of the pyres but we just tripped and hit our collective head and forgot that.
In other news, any last minute guesses folks want to make on origins for Marisa? Basically anything is fair game, except for I believe fairies (can't really be born, plus not really youkai) and various forms of undead (you can't really reincarnate as a ghost or a jiangshi or whatever.)
My personal three guesses-
Flower Youkai - In a similar vein to how Youmu became a bird because Satori was similar to Yuyuko, Yuuka shares similarities with Mima. (Plus, Master Spark!)
explanation for red hair is just that she dyed it.
Rokurokubi - Red haired, creeping around in the human village? That's a bang bang for a Banki! Sometimes, occam's razor applies.
Tsukumogami - Raiko's thunderous soul would be a great match for Marisa. Does raise the problem that she shouldn't be able to be born yet, but there are ways around it.
reasons I disqualified other options:
any magician - too easy, I feel like if Marisa had to take a youkai form it wouldn't even be up to a vote if she could just be a Magician.
redheads - Koa/Meiling are too recent to Gensokyo, Orin and Komachi are already known factors, the humans are out by default, and Gooboi is definitely too afraid of the devastation we would cause if we were somehow related to Hecatia.
any other non redhead - I know I made the argument myself for the Yuuka origin that she could dye her hair, but I admit to it being somewhat of a stretch, and the other parts of the justification were pretty strong.
If we exist diegetically as Hollow Psyches, does that mean we can legally draw fanart of Tallyanon and have it depict canon?
>>212399
Pretty much this. We should choose and the answer is very obvious:
[X} Stay with the Yakumo family.
She'll learn to defend herself. Going back to the Motoori is just the easy and lazy way out. It also won't help defeat the Pyres at all.
[A] Akyuu: Go eat lunch and be cooler than some responsible sage.
Seconded.
>>212408
I want to see the Tallyanon fanart now. What other notable anons are there? Gooboi in disguise, maybe? Obviously got to pick some of the name bearers for this hypothetical like Kosu.
>>212409
The only one I can think of with red highlights is Tokiko's wing-hair, but that doesn't feel like a particularly likely connection.
Maybe orange hair?
to be honest, it seems to me that there's a ton of pressure on the IC to remain Youkai as is; simply speaking, I think they have gained substantially more than they lost in the transfer, and thus stand to lose so, so much more if they return to being human.
I guess it does depend on how the restoration would be handled but depending on the approach it could effectively shatter say, the relationship between Reimu and her surprisingly supportive, loving Yakuza Oyabun mom or her sculptor goddess other mom and possibly even the mom she was supposed to have, depending on how the three work out the time sharing agreement; while Okuu existed as an independent entity in the past timeline, given how interconnected she seems (and the speculation that she may actually be Youmu's ghost half) restoring Youmu might injure her in this cycle, or far worse. And that's just considering the two who have the most pressure so far to return back to being human, since I largely agree with you on Kosuzu and Akyuu; as for Marisa, well... I guess we'll see - it kinda depends on what her situation is like, though some of what Gooboi has said in the past about her circumstances has seemed... not favorable.
The reveal of we anons being the little spirits was something else, it had me smiling like a dumbass.
Yukari blocking the vote so Kosuzu can choose for herself, literally breaking the 4th wall, was so brilliant that I actually broke from smile to a full laugh.
I look forward to seeing the epilogues for this arc and especially to see where Marisa ends up. I want to read all the theories and reasons for the votes, for I enjoy that as much as reading the updates proper.
>>212413
Honestly, this. There's a reason that voting for an origin took up a whole thread for the past two ICs. It's very fun seeing the discussions, debates, frog photos, and absolute chaos.
I am definitely looking forward to the epilogues too, but the craziness is something special.
>>212411
I was thinking more what colour shows up when the hair has light on it, so a black or brown hair that looks reddish in lighter conditions (see pic for example... and my theory for villrisa's mother.)
> Yukari has blocked the vote. This time, you can't influence her decision.
No. No! Bad Yukari! Bad! Bad! Bad!
>>212416
Join the "make Akyuu eat a sandwich instead of focusing on Kosuzu" movement. Our coalition will stand strong!
>>212415
Actually, that does have some interesting implications. Too hard to categorize, and that might be a bit out there, but perhaps! I can't think of anyone I'd be confident in raising for it, though.
Also, I'd like to bring this bit up from the QnA! Nice to finally have an answer on it.
"[?] if it does turn out that Aunn has come back in time, granted that there won't be a origin vote, but will we get an Aunn arc?"
"There will most likely not be an Aunn arc. Neither one where she's the focus, or one where she's playable.
There are actually very, very specific reasons why the IC's are CYOA, and the non-IC's aren't. Eiki's description at the end of A/A is part of that - their identities are somewhat fluid due to having two sets of memories.
What's happening with Aunn is different. You may find out in Youmu's epilogues."
> Yukari’s appraising look… slowly formed into a smile. “For a moment there I thought you’d be asking to rush out to battle.”
changes the way i read this line while looking for prior mentions of the little spirits. yukari definitely saw us trying to get kosuzu to fight.
>>212406
i feel like koa/meiling wouldn't be too far of a stretch. one of akyuu's origins was going to be a scarlet, and i vaguely remember gooboi wanting at least one outsider character. meiling in particular- if gooboi goes with the fanon that she's a dragon, then she technically meets one of the criteria of marisa's options: "beastly in mythology but not in touhou". i'm hoping for the flower youkai, though! marisa might just be a youkai from a different flower than yuuka.
>>212413
as soon as the votes on youmu's thread started up i knew that any future origin votes were going to be rough. and then when we were voting for kosuzu i knew marisa's was going to be a veritable bloodbath. there won't be any youkai mountain option so i won't be shilling hard for that, so it'll really depend on what i like the best out of the three. i'm really looking forward to being in the trenches with yall.
Wait, you mean this whole time, we are by some technicality the baddies?
I should have finished this a couple days ago, but found myself purging heretics and xenos with my battle brothers, apologies for the delay.

>>212420
Thank you for the mentions. I don't like drawing self portraits, so if there's art of 'Kosu' I'd like it to be made by someone else ^_^
As for other anons, Tallyanon is for sure one. Other is the fabled tidepisser. And maybe the one that wants "current-arc-named" attacks? Also, the other artists.
For the "named spirits", from the top of my head and in no particular order, there's Asutnima, Lost Soul, Pavise, Bulb, Jahoth, Vanilla Enthusiast, Lord Hylia, Lebon and probably many others I can't remember just now.
>>212406
>>212421
All I will confirm at this time is that your current state resembles the Hollow Psyche spell's victims, as well as the victims of Pyres. How you ended up in that state remains to be seen.
As long as the art is of a basically microscopic, nearly-featureless mote of light... then yes, it'd technically be canon. XD. though i'm sure adding some small features like a spectral clipboard wouldn't go amiss.
I may add a poll for what are people's favourites colours into the marisa vote. Just to help anyone who wants to do something like that.
wow... that the little spirits were us all this time, I didn't expect it.
Since some are also talking about the youkai that Marisa could be, I created a list a version 2.0 list to make it easier to see what type she could be too.
They are without names because it would take me forever and I wanted it to be something simple xd
>>212425
It's sort of iffy. The species was Amanojaku, but Lunar God is in reference to Sagume, since she would have been the actual mom figure.
>>212427
Ame-no-Sagume is sometimes portrayed as a Heavenly God and sometimes as an Earthly God, which Touhou reconciles by portraying her as mixed, and is also the metatextual inspiration for and/or actual ancestor of amanojaku, which Touhou seems to have kept in place. I'm pretty sure Seija at one point calls Sagume the origin of all amanojaku, or something like that.
I'm entirely on team Yokai, at least for some of the Immaterial Children. I think it's the most interesting option that leads to the most interesting conclusions.
I'd be OK with the idea of them getting split into human and Yokai versions - that's the kind of thing that sparks creativity. Like, what would happen to Utsuho? Would Bnnuy Akyuu lose her other characteristics, such as perfect memory? Would the halves have no memory of being the other? That kind of thing.
TBH, I was hoping early on in this arc that I could push for a sneak-thief Kosuzu, but after the theories started becoming more plausible, it just became unconscionable. TBH I'm sorta hoping we get a boisterous, shameless Yokai Marisa, but then again, that's just my take!
[X] I mean, sure? Is there any reason she needs to choose one or the other, though? There are viable systems for letting her be with both, you know.
>>212431
It’s not that simple. She can’t really split the middle between officially being a Yakumo or not. Trying to be both would effectively turn into being a Motoori, simply because a never-seen-before Yakumo can’t really associate with a family known to be affected by the Immaterial Children incident without blowing the secrets of what happened wide open.
Even if Kosuzu decides to become a Motoori, she’s still going to be training with Ran and Yukari, she’ll just be renouncing her official relationship with them for a somewhat nebulous(Yukari claims that the Motooris will welcome her as eagerly as Ran, but I’m withholding my judgement on that until Kosuzu meets them.) promise of a return to her old life, which, as has been said before, isn’t something Kosuzu remembers particularly fondly.
Sorry about rambling, but the TL;DR is that your suggestion would either cause massive chaos by inadvertently revealing Reimu as a yokai or turn into Kosuzu becoming a Motoori in practice.
I'm looking forward to the madness that the Marisa species vote is sure to be. Personally, I'm hoping we end up with Inchling Marisa. Just picture it. Cute, tiny Marisa flying around on a toothbrush, firing giant laser beams from a tiny magical honeycomb. It would be so funny!
Really looking forward to the Marisa vote! It'll be the first one I can actually participate in as I only got into this fic during this arc...
Kosuzu took a slow, deep breath, trying to reason it out.
“If… if I did choose to be just a Motoori again -”
“We would both still be planning to tutor you,” Yukari responded. “Your first few lessons would differ, but we will teach you everything we could, of course.”
Ran nodded in firm agreement. “We want you to be the strongest you can be, Kosuzu. Anything we can do to help you, we will.”
The young kitsune looked between the two of them. She took a deep breath, asking just one question.
“You… think it’s better for me to hide, don’t you?”
Yukari knelt down. “We think it will be safer for you. Perhaps, in the fullness of time-”
“I… I never minded the thought of becoming a youkai, in my past life. Perhaps I was too curious for my own good.” Kosuzu stepped forward. “And I know that it was stupid, and reckless… but I still wasn’t afraid.”
She sighed. “But… once I actually became a youkai, I’ve been nothing but afraid. Running away from things. Trying to hide when I was hurting. Letting Tsukasa walk all over me.”
“I know… I know it’s safer, and probably less stressful for everyone if I go back to my old family,” Kosuzu admitted. She put her hand to her chest. “And I know that if I stay with them only, I’ll still be able to grow in skill. But…”
She clutched at her chest, looking up at Ran and Yukari. “But hiding away is what a kuda-gitsune does. And I’m not a tube fox - I’m a kitsune.”
She focused. “Me and my friends - we’re going to be fighting to protect the world. I can’t just run and hide away from my problems. I need to face them head-on. I need to get stronger, I need to be braver. So… I’m not going to just claim I’m some stray fox. I’m keeping both of my families.”
For a long moment, neither of the elder youkai spoke. Kosuzu’s resolve started to falter, as Yukari seemed to mull it over.
“You’re certain of this?” Ran asked, one final time. Kosuzu… nodded, firmly.
After a long, long moment… the sage shrugged, a grin slipping out from behind her veneer of professionalism. “Ah well, we tried. Looks like she’s staying with us.”
Ran launched herself forward, hugging her daughter. Kosuzu hugged back just as tightly, as the larger kitsune lifted her up. “Kosuzu… My little bluebell…”
Yukari stood up, opening a gap. “Well! We have many preparations to make for your return, Suzu. But first things first… here is the room you’ll be staying in tonight.”
Ran stepped through the gap, giving Kosuzu the chance to observe her surroundings. Rather than the dorm the Immaterial Children had been assigned, this was more of a formal guest room, with a large, luxurious bed, a dedicated bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. Kosuzu boggled at the luxury of the room.
She turned to Yukari, more than a little nervous. “Lady Yukari… What’s so special about this room? What makes it safer than any of the others?”
The sage smiled. “The room itself is perfectly ordinary. The only thing that makes it special is that the bed’s big enough for two.”
There was a gleam in Ran’s eyes as she clicked her fingers. At once, the older kitsune was in pajamas. “Kosuzu… if you don’t mind, would you like to sleep with me?”
Yakumo Kosuzu snuggled in as close as she could, enjoying the endless fluff of her mother’s tails. She felt more safe in that bed than she had for years. Yukari chuckled as the fox settled in. “If your fur wasn’t a different color, Suzu, I might not be able to spot you in there.”
Kosuzu looked up at her mother, slightly blushing. “I’m… not being a bother, am I? I know it’s super early…”
Ran shook her head. “I was up all night just making my way here, Suzu. I’m pretty tired myself. Besides, even if I couldn’t sleep… there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than right here with you.”
The little fox snuggled in, engulfed in fluffy tails. “...Thanks, mom.” She gave a small smile. “I know I’m gonna be safe here.”
Yukari scoffed a bit in mock indignation. “Honestly, the cheek of this girl. Makes a big talk about facing up to danger, and follows up with comments like that?”
She reached out to touch Kosuzu’s head… and at once, the sleepiness returned. Kosuzu yawned, feeling all her exhaustion hit her at once.
The sage smiled. “Well, I shouldn’t keep either of you up, should I? You’ll both be busy tomorrow - you have a lot to learn, Kosuzu, and Ran has a lot to teach.”
Kosuzu managed a sleepy grin. “I’ll be ready, I promise. I wanna learn everything - like how you changed your clothes just now!”
Her mother chuckled. “My formal clothes were just an illusion, actually. Have you learned how to do those yet?”
Kosuzu shook her head. “I’ve only really learned some danmaku stuff and the silence spell. Oh- Actually, I wanted to ask, how does sound ‘travel’?”
“Ah, it’s a little complicated to explain… but I can tell you in the morning. We’ll make some time for it.”
Kosuzu grinned, feeling her tail wag. She heard the sound of Yukari’s gap closing, and took a slow breath. “...Mom?”
“Mmm?”
The young kit felt her face start to blush. “Um… I-I don’t remember much, from when I was little. But… I do remember one… one lullaby.”
“A lullaby? …Ah.” Ran’s eyes widened in recognition. “I think I know the one you mean. The song was actually written by a previous Hakurei Shrine Maiden, but…” Her eyes turned sad. “I’ve always found it fitting. It’s been a little while, so I can’t promise it’ll be perfect…”
Kosuzu was sure the blush had covered her entire face by this point. “...It doesn’t have to be. I wanna hear it, anyways.”
“Alright. Let me see…” The kitsune focused, before starting to sing. “Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child…”
At once, Kosuzu felt her heart ache. The pain of years weighed on her all over again, and she felt herself tearing up. Ran pulled her in close, wiping away her tears with the tip of a tail.
“Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.
You’re such a good girl, Now it’s time to sleep.
Let’s put away your bells and balls, balloons and drums
And I’ll tell you a story…”
How much had she truly lost, due to Tsukasa? How many sweet lullabies, how many good dreams, how many warm hugs? Perhaps she’d never fully understand the damage the tube fox had caused.
All she could do was move forward from here. With her family, together again.
“Your eyes still have not seen
What it means to be heir to our name
But sleep peacefully my child
Be not troubled…”
She felt the older kitsune’s tails tug her in, ever so slightly, and heard Ran’s voice breaking as she sang. They were both feeling the same pain - mourning the years lost, mourning what could have been. The two foxes held each other close, clinging like it may very well be the last time once more.
And yet… Kosuzu couldn’t stay awake. Not as tired as she was. Not with her mother this close. Not with that song, sung with that gentle, loving voice.
Slowly, she drifted into the next world. This moment of love, and peace… she clutched it as tightly as she could, and pulled it into her very heart.
Tomorrow was the first day of the rest of her life. And she couldn’t wait to start.
It was one of Keiki’s guest rooms. [Her eyes scanned the room, trying to see if anything had changed. If anything was out of place.]
Then, she felt something small stir against her chest. She looked down, and smiled.
[...No. Nothing was out of place. Everything was exactly where it should be.]
She leant in, to an orange-coloured ear, and whispered as gently as she could.
“My little bluebell… it’s time to wake up.”
The lullaby is Eternal Lullaby, by Diao ye zong. You can find the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKpu-wwFEAk and if you just want the lyrics, that’s at https://kafkafuura.wordpress.com/2011/10/17/yuukyuu-no-komoriuta/
